The oldest fair-market in Friuli, around the Nativity of Mary
In the heart of the Canal del Ferro, a stone's throw from the Austrian border, Pontebba preserves one of the oldest fair traditions in the region. According to tradition, Settembre Pontebbano dates back as far as 1342, and is held every year around September 8th, the feast of the Nativity of Mary and patron saint of the community. In 2025, it reached its 56th edition.
For three days, the town's streets fill with stalls, with the fair-market invading the centre from the morning, alongside artisan markets. The gastronomic heart of the festival is the large ice rink, which hosts a food village with border specialties: frico pontebbano, deer goulash, polenta, Zwetschenknödel, palacinke, and apple fritters, in a menu that tells of the encounter between Friulian and Central European cuisine.
The program alternates various moments: the day dedicated to the Alpini, the grand charity lottery with thousands of prizes, exhibitions, traditional games, sports, entertainment for children, and the characteristic "Madonna's aperitifs". Every evening, live music and shows with orchestras and folk groups animate the squares until late at night.
Organized by the Municipality of Pontebba with the Pro Loco Pontebbana and local associations, Settembre Pontebbano is much more than a fair: it is the identity festival of a mountain community, capable of bringing together devotion, historical memory, and conviviality in one of Friuli's most characteristic territories.
For 2026, Settembre Pontebbano continues in Pontebba, in line with the long tradition that makes it one of the oldest fair-markets in Friuli. The event, which celebrated its 56th edition in 2025 (September 6-8), is held around September 8th, the feast of the Nativity of Mary. The exact dates are published by the Municipality of Pontebba and the Pro Loco Pontebbana in the weeks preceding the event.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be announced by the organizers. The established structure of the event, spread over three days, includes:
How to get there: Pontebba is served by the A23 motorway and the Canal del Ferro state road, well connected with Udine, Tarvisio, and Austria.
Admission: free access to the fair and the town streets. Paid consumption at the gastronomic village at the ice rink.
