November in the courtyards of the ancient village of San Martino, in Scisciano

In Scisciano, a small town in the province of Naples in the heart of the Nola area, in Campania, the month of November has always been linked to a simple, fragrant pastry: the p'zzetta 'e vino cuotto. It is made with a leavened dough enriched with cooked wine—obtained from the slow reduction of grape must—along with walnuts, semolina, and corn flour; according to local lore, the traditional recipe also includes quince and pumpkin. The result is a dark, dense, and comforting treat that the Campania Region has included in its list of Traditional Agri-food Products (PAT). It is not a refined pastry shop dessert: it is the way peasant families once transformed the remnants of the harvest.
The festival takes place in the ancient village of San Martino, along Via San Martino, and features a unique characteristic that sets it apart from many other town fairs: it does not revolve around a single stage, but instead spills into the gateways and courtyards of old houses, opened specifically for the occasion. Visitors wander from one entrance to another among tasting stalls, art installations, exhibitions, and small performances, turning the entire village into a continuous, illuminated, and bustling path until late at night. It is a format that perfectly explains the subtitle local chronicles have used for years: scents and traditions in the courtyards of San Martino.
Alongside the p'zzetta, the stalls offer a repertoire of Campanian peasant cuisine, cooked by volunteers and served in the courtyards:
Recent editions have also included cooking workshops dedicated to preparing the p'zzetta, with the ancient recipe explained step-by-step for those who want to recreate it at home.
The festival is not just about gastronomy. For years, the program has been structured around three pillars: art, entertainment, and taste. Street artists and folk music groups perform in the courtyards, while the village halls host contemporary art exhibitions, ceramics and embroidery displays, book presentations, and the «S. Martino: the ways of wine» scholarship award. Local schools play an important role, involved through guided tours led by students and photography contests dedicated to the decoration of the gateways.
Behind the event is the San Martino Cultural Association, founded in Scisciano in 1996 by a group of friends passionate about traditions, music, and community life, supported by the San Martino Multipurpose Club. The association has promoted the festival for over twenty years and manages other village events throughout the year, such as the «Na serà 'e maggio» festival.
The event falls around November 11th, St. Martin's Day, when according to popular saying, "every must becomes wine." The 2025 edition, the twenty-seventh, was held from November 7th to 11th, 2025. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced by the organizers: it is best to follow the San Martino Cultural Association's channels to find out as soon as they are released.
Those who arrive in Scisciano will not find a manufactured fair, but a village that opens its doors. The p'zzetta is eaten where it was born, in front of the very gateways that invented it, with a glass of new wine in hand and folk music echoing off the walls. It is one of the best opportunities in this part of Campania to understand how a single recipe can hold an entire community together.
Following the twenty-seventh edition in November 2025, the P'zzetta and Vino Cuott Festival is expected to return in 2026 to the gateways and courtyards of the village of San Martino, in Scisciano, in the province of Naples. The event is historically linked to the November 11th, St. Martin's Day, and has always taken place in the days immediately preceding or coinciding with that date.
As of the publication date of this entry, however, there are no official dates or a published program for the 2026 edition. Those planning to visit are invited to check for updates on the channels of the San Martino Cultural Association, which normally presents the calendar in the weeks leading up to the event.
