The re-enactment of the 279 BC Battle of Pyrrhus in Ascoli Satriano
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In 279 BC, the territory of ancient Ausculum โ modern-day Ascoli Satriano in the province of Foggia โ was the site of one of the most famous battles of the ancient world. Pyrrhus, King of Epirus, having arrived in Italy to defend the Greek cities, faced the Roman legions led by consul Publius Decius Mus. The victory was so costly that it entered common parlance: this is the origin of the expression "Pyrrhic victory." The Osculana Pugna brings that epochal clash back to life in the heart of the Daunia region.
Organized with the support of the Municipality of Ascoli Satriano and the artistic direction of Daunรฌas Aรนskla, the event brings together up to fifteen historical groups from all over Italy, coordinated by the Gruppo Storico Romano. Over one hundred and fifty costumed participants reconstruct Epirote phalanxes, Macedonian mercenaries, and Samnite, Bruttian, Apulian, and Lucanian warriors arrayed against Roman legionaries in a 100-minute show that combines narration, combat, and the spectacle of war elephants.
The event takes place across several locations in the city: the municipal stadium, which hosts the military camps, the Dauni Archaeological Park, the library, and the historic center. Alongside the battle scenes, visitors can explore military camps reconstructed from ancient sources and a Daunian civilian village, featuring educational workshops, historical crafts, and archaeological cooking demonstrations.
The Osculana Pugna is more than just a battle: the program includes historical conferences, book presentations, and evening shows. The theatrical performances are entrusted to the Il Teatro della Polvere company, while the musical program has featured Celtic and folk music concerts. An event designed for history buffs, families, and the curious, blending philological rigor with popular entertainment.
In Ascoli Satriano, a village in the Daunian Mountains of the Foggia province, this re-enactment highlights a primary archaeological heritage โ from the famous Museum Complex to the polychrome marbles of the Griffins โ and strengthens the bond between the community and its ancient roots. Today, the Osculana Pugna is one of the most heartfelt re-enactments in all of Northern Puglia.
The 2026 edition of the Osculana Pugna is expected, as per tradition, in the month of May in Ascoli Satriano, in the heart of the Daunia region. At the moment, the organizers have not yet released official dates or a detailed program. The usual structure of the re-enactment is expected: military camps at the stadium, the major battle spectacle, visits to the Dauni Archaeological Park, and evening events featuring theater and music. Information will be updated as soon as it becomes available.
Ascoli Satriano is located in the province of Foggia, in Northern Puglia.
