The medieval re-enactment bringing the knights and monks of the Order of Calatrava back to Orsara di Puglia
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of Orsara di Puglia, a small village in the Monti Dauni mountains in the province of Foggia, near the border with Irpinia, one of the most evocative historical re-enactments in Apulia takes place every summer: the Historical Pageant of the Knights and Monks of Calatrava. For one night, the village transforms into a medieval set, with the streets of the center illuminated by torches and populated by knights, ladies, monks, musicians, and flag-wavers in period costumes.
The re-enactment is rooted in an authentic page of local history. In 1229, the monks and knights of the Order of Calatrava, a Spanish monastic-military order from Castile and León, arrived in Orsara at the request of Queen Teresa of León and her daughters Sancha and Dulce. Approved by Pope Gregory IX, the Calatrava took over the management of the Abbey of Sant'Angelo, which they held for about eighty years with the task of watching over the territory and reinvigorating its religious and economic life. This is the episode the pageant stages: the solemn entry of the chivalric order into the village.
The core of the event is the grand parade that winds through the historic center. The procession starts from Largo San Michele towards Largo San Domenico, Porta San Pietro, Corso della Vittoria, and Piazza Municipio, ending in front of the Abbey of Sant'Angelo, the symbolic site of the story. Leading the parade are the Grand Master, the monks, the knights, and the ladies, followed by a long retinue of participants of all ages, including children, who recreate the atmosphere of the medieval village.
The most recent edition featured over 200 performers, including musicians and flag-wavers, bringing to life what the local press defined as the most impressive parade in recent years. Local groups contribute to the success of the show, such as the cultural association Musica è, with medieval music and dances, and the Gruppo Florentinum of Torremaggiore, with flag-wavers and musicians who set the rhythm of the procession.
As the eighth centenary of the arrival of the Calatrava (1229) approaches, the event takes on an increasingly significant identity value for the community of Orsara di Puglia. Organized with the support of the municipal administration, the pageant is now a landmark event of the Monti Dauni summer and an opportunity to rediscover a village with intact charm, among alleys, churches, and the flavors of the Daunian tradition.
For the 2026 edition of the Historical Pageant of the Knights and Monks of Calatrava in Orsara di Puglia, no official dates or program have been released yet. Following the trend of previous editions, traditionally held in mid-August, the event is expected to renew the re-enactment of the arrival of the Calatrava at the Abbey of Sant'Angelo. The detailed program, including times and the pageant route, will be published by the organizers closer to the event.
The pageant takes place in the historic center of Orsara di Puglia (FG), in the Monti Dauni, starting from Largo San Michele and ending at the Abbey of Sant'Angelo.
By car: Orsara di Puglia can be reached via the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway (Candela exit) or the SS90 state road. By train: the nearest stations are on the line to Foggia, the provincial capital, from where you can continue by car or local bus services.
The event takes place along the village streets and is free to attend.
We recommend wearing comfortable footwear for the village's uphill streets and arriving early to find a good spot along the parade route.
