The patronal feast of Deliceto and the historical re-enactment of knights and ladies in honor of the Madonna dell'Olmitello

In the heart of the Monti Dauni, perched among the woods of the Foggia province, the town of Deliceto experiences its most intense moment every September: the solemn festivities in honor of Maria Santissima dell'Olmitello, the town's patron saint. This is not merely a patronal feast, but a re-enactment that weaves together popular faith, history, and the rural traditions of the Capitanata, culminating in the famous Historical Cavalcade.
The devotion of the people of Deliceto dates back to September 22, 1837, when the town was gripped by a terrible cholera epidemic. Tradition holds that as soon as the venerated statue of the Madonna dell'Olmitello was carried in procession through the village streets, the plague ceased. Since then, Deliceto has renewed its vow of gratitude to its protector every year, who is housed in the rural church of Olmitello, nestled in the countryside.
The most evocative moment is the Historical Cavalcade of September 22nd, which is registered in the Ministry of Culture's list of historical re-enactments. The statue of the Madonna is paraded on a float accompanied by a long and colorful procession: knights and ladies on horseback, nobles and commoners, and farmers in authentic late 19th-century costumes. An entire town stages its own history, complete with scenes of village life, flags, and performers. The procession traditionally departs from the Monumental Fountain and winds through the village to Piazzale Belvedere, overlooking the Tavoliere plain.
The festivities span three days. They open with a dawn pilgrimage from Piazzale Belvedere to the church of Olmitello, continue with solemn processions from the Mother Church and the Parish of the Most Holy Savior, and are accompanied by the traditional agricultural and livestock fair, a testament to the rural and pastoral soul of this corner of Puglia, tied to the culture of transhumance. The evenings at Piazzale Belvedere host major free concerts: in recent years, nationally renowned artists have performed in Deliceto, attracting thousands of people from across the Daunia region.
The Feast of the Olmitello is the perfect opportunity to discover one of the most authentic villages in inland Puglia, far from the tourist routes of the coast. Between medieval alleys, the Convent of the Consolation associated with Saint Alphonsus Maria de' Liguori, and the panoramas of the Monti Dauni, Deliceto welcomes visitors with its hospitality and the flavors of Daunian cuisine. An event that combines the spirituality of a patronal feast with the charm of a historical pageant and live music.
The 2026 edition of the Patronal Feast of the Madonna dell'Olmitello and the Historical Cavalcade of Deliceto is expected, as per tradition, in the month of September, with the historical procession re-enacting the vow of 1837. At the moment, the detailed calendar and the program featuring concerts and religious appointments have not yet been published by the organizers. This page will be updated as soon as the Municipality of Deliceto and the Pro Loco announce the official dates and line-up.
Deliceto is located in the Monti Dauni, in the province of Foggia. By car, take the A16 motorway to the Candela exit, then the SS655 towards Bovino-Deliceto; it is about 45 minutes from Foggia. The nearest train station is in Foggia, which is connected by local bus lines.
The festivities traditionally take place in September, with the Historical Cavalcade set for September 22nd. It is advisable to check the updated dates and program on the official channels of the Municipality of Deliceto and the Pro Loco.
Shows and concerts at Piazzale Belvedere are free to attend. It is recommended to arrive early to watch the Cavalcade and find a spot along the procession route. Don't miss a walk through the historic center and a visit to the Convent of the Consolation.
