About Foggia Medievale

Foggia Medievale is a historical re-enactment that turns back the clock on summer evenings in the historic center of Foggia, Puglia. A parade of flag-wavers, musicians, noblemen and ladies, archers, falconers, and fire-breathers brings the capital of the Capitanata region to life with performances, duels, and fire shows. Launched recently by the Municipality and the Pro Loco, the event turns squares and alleys into a living portrait of the Daunian Middle Ages, with free admission and widespread public participation.

Foggia Medievale: The Daunian capital returns to the Middle Ages

Foggia Medievale is a historical re-enactment held in the Municipality of Foggia, the capital of the Capitanata region in Puglia. For one summer evening, the city's historic center and the Rione Candelaro district transform into a grand open-air stage, where flag-wavers, musicians, ladies, knights, and commoners transport visitors into the atmosphere of the Middle Ages. The initiative, promoted by the municipal administration together with the Pro Loco as part of the Foggia Estate program, is designed to showcase the city's iconic landmarks and bring culture out of the theaters and directly to the people.

The historical pageant and performances

The heart of the event is the historical pageant that winds through the city streets: a flow of colors, sounds, and figures from another era that moves with solemn magnificence, turning the streets into a living painting. Alongside the essential flag-wavers, with their gravity-defying maneuvers, are musicians playing ancient melodies, performers in stunning period costumes, archers, falconers with birds of prey in flight, and fire-breathers. There are also duelists engaging in spectacular combat to the delight of the crowd.

An experience for everyone

Foggia Medievale is more than just a show to watch: the event includes moments of direct participation, such as the archery range set up along the route, where visitors can try their hand at shooting under the guidance of experts. The grand finale usually takes place in one of the city's symbolic squares, such as Piazza Nigri, in front of the evocative Porta Arpana of the Civic Museum, which transforms into an arena of emotions for the occasion.

Foggia and its Daunian identity

The event is rooted in the history of Foggia, a city linked to the figure of Frederick II of Swabia, who chose this location for one of his imperial palaces and loved the Capitanata region as a land for hunting and residence. Re-enacting the Middle Ages in Foggia therefore means reconnecting the threads of an illustrious past, returned to the public through the volunteer work of local associations and the passion of re-enactment groups.
