Foggia Medievale is a historical re-enactment held in the Municipality of Foggia, the capital of the Capitanata region in Puglia. For one summer evening, the city's historic center and the Rione Candelaro district transform into a grand open-air stage, where flag-wavers, musicians, ladies, knights, and commoners transport visitors into the atmosphere of the Middle Ages. The initiative, promoted by the municipal administration together with the Pro Loco as part of the Foggia Estate program, is designed to showcase the city's iconic landmarks and bring culture out of the theaters and directly to the people.
The heart of the event is the historical pageant that winds through the city streets: a flow of colors, sounds, and figures from another era that moves with solemn magnificence, turning the streets into a living painting. Alongside the essential flag-wavers, with their gravity-defying maneuvers, are musicians playing ancient melodies, performers in stunning period costumes, archers, falconers with birds of prey in flight, and fire-breathers. There are also duelists engaging in spectacular combat to the delight of the crowd.
Foggia Medievale is more than just a show to watch: the event includes moments of direct participation, such as the archery range set up along the route, where visitors can try their hand at shooting under the guidance of experts. The grand finale usually takes place in one of the city's symbolic squares, such as Piazza Nigri, in front of the evocative Porta Arpana of the Civic Museum, which transforms into an arena of emotions for the occasion.
The event is rooted in the history of Foggia, a city linked to the figure of Frederick II of Swabia, who chose this location for one of his imperial palaces and loved the Capitanata region as a land for hunting and residence. Re-enacting the Middle Ages in Foggia therefore means reconnecting the threads of an illustrious past, returned to the public through the volunteer work of local associations and the passion of re-enactment groups.
An event now eagerly awaited by locals and visitors alike, combining entertainment, tradition, and the rediscovery of the Daunian capital's historical heritage.
In 2026, Foggia Medievale reaches its third edition. The event has been included in the Foggia Estate 2026 program presented by the municipal administration, which will bring cultural events to the squares, districts, and villages of the capital from June until mid-September.
The 2026 edition will once again involve the Rione Candelaro and the historic center of Foggia, with the traditional parade of flag-wavers, musicians, and costumed performers. At the moment, the exact dates and the detailed program have not yet been published: updates will be released on the institutional channels of the Municipality of Foggia and on the organization's social media profiles.
Foggia is a major railway hub: the central station is connected to the main cities on the Adriatic coast and to Naples. By car, it can be reached via the A14 motorway (Foggia exit) and the SS16 state road. The nearest airports are "Gino Lisa" in Foggia and Bari-Palese.
The event takes place in the streets and squares of the center with free admission. During the event, traffic restrictions and parking bans are expected in the affected area: it is advisable to reach the center on foot and check for traffic updates via the official channels of the Municipality of Foggia.
