The goose festival of the Rione Cassero, in the heart of the Val di Chiana
The Ocio Festival is one of the most beloved gastronomic events in Castiglion Fiorentino, located in the heart of the Val di Chiana, in the Province of Arezzo (Tuscany). Organized by the Rione Cassero, the event celebrates an absolute staple of the local peasant cuisine: the ocio, or goose, as it is called in the local dialect.
In the Val di Chiana, geese were carefully raised throughout the year and cooked especially during the threshing season and at major celebrations, when little remained of the pig slaughtered in January. As a large bird, the "ocio" could feed many people, and nothing was ever wasted.
The signature dish of this tradition is the stuffed goose neck: the bird's neck is deboned and filled with a mixture of breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, garlic, parsley, eggs, nutmeg, and meat (traditionally liver was used). It is a preparation that tells the story of the Valdichiana peasant culture, which the festival helps pass down from generation to generation.
The Rione Cassero, with its white and blue colors, represents the ancient Terziere di Retina and is one of the three districts that bring life to Castiglion Fiorentino. Its territory includes the southern part of the town and the hamlets of Montecchio Vesponi, Pozzo Nuovo, La Nave, Castroncello, and Brolio. The district is best known for its participation in the Palio dei Rioni, the horse race held in June in honor of the Madonna delle Grazie del Rivaio, but its activities go beyond the Palio: parties, dinners, and festivals like the Ocio Festival represent fundamental moments for community gathering and fundraising.
The Ocio Festival is above all a convivial occasion: long tables, traditional dishes, and the genuine atmosphere of a Tuscan village feast. For those visiting the Val di Chiana, it is also a way to discover an authentic flavor, far from the tourist circuits, and to experience the identity of a community that cherishes its roots. The setting is Castiglion Fiorentino, a medieval village dominated by the Cassero Tower and overlooking the rolling hills between Tuscany and Umbria.
The 2026 Ocio Festival will be held on Saturday, September 12 in Castiglion Fiorentino (Arezzo), hosted by the Rione Cassero. As per tradition, the festival offers goose-based dishes from the Val di Chiana peasant cuisine in a convivial village-fair atmosphere.
The detailed program and menu for the 2026 edition will be announced in the weeks leading up to the event on the channels of the Rione Cassero and the Municipality of Castiglion Fiorentino. As in previous years, the evening will revolve around traditional goose dishes, particularly the stuffed goose neck, accompanied by the flavors of Arezzo cuisine.
The 2026 edition is scheduled for Saturday, September 12, 2026, in Castiglion Fiorentino (AR), as indicated in the municipal festival calendar.
Castiglion Fiorentino is located along the Florence-Rome railway line (Castiglion Fiorentino station) and is easily accessible by car from the Monte San Savino exit of the A1 motorway, continuing towards the Val di Chiana.
For the detailed program, menu, and opening hours, it is recommended to follow the channels of the Rione Cassero and the official communications of the Municipality of Castiglion Fiorentino.
