Float parades, masked quadrilles, and street festivities in the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese area
Every winter, the Carnival transforms Nocera Superiore, a town in the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese area in the province of Salerno, into a massive open-air stage. Allegorical floats, masked quadrilles, dance troupes, and musical entertainment parade through the city streets to the commercial heart of the town, Corso Matteotti, where the event culminates in a collective celebration. It is the most anticipated popular event of the cold season in this part of Campania, promoted by the municipal administration with the participation of neighborhood associations.
The well-established format features two parallel processions, designed to reach different neighborhoods and allow more families to watch the floats pass by their homes. The first procession travels along Via Pecorari toward Via Russo; the second winds through Via della Libertà, Via Spagnuolo, Via Monte del Vesuvio, Via Kennedy, and Via Napoli. The two routes then converge at Piazza Marco Polo and continue together to Corso Matteotti, the final stop featuring dancing, music, masks, and entertainment.
The floats are built in the preceding months by local associations, which oversee the structure, papier-mâché, costumes, and choreography. The 2026 edition featured the highly visible Dia de los muertos float by the Mente Cuore Forza association, presented in Piazza Materdomini. Surrounding the floats are the quadrilles, masked groups that dance along the entire route, involving children and teenagers from the local districts.
Alongside the parade, the municipality has included «Dancing with the Masks» in the program, a day dedicated to local dance schools. Corso Matteotti becomes an open-air stage for costumed choreographic performances, filled with music, color, and crowds. Interested schools submit applications to the municipality in the days prior, following the notice published on the official portal: a way to showcase student talent and engage citizens of all ages.
The town is built on the site of the ancient Nuceria Alfaterna and preserves valuable historical landmarks, most notably the Early Christian Baptistery of Santa Maria Maggiore, one of the largest of its kind in Italy. A trip to the Carnival is the perfect opportunity to discover the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese, a territory suspended between the Sarno plain, the Lattari Mountains, and the nearby Amalfi Coast, with a culinary tradition rooted in the San Marzano tomato and authentic Campanian cuisine.
The event is concentrated during the Carnival period, between February and early March depending on the liturgical calendar. Exact dates and the final route of the processions are announced by the Municipality of Nocera Superiore a few weeks in advance via the official portal and local press: it is advisable to check the program just before attending, especially since rain-related postponements are always possible.
The municipal administration led by Mayor Gennaro D'Acunzi had presented a two-day carnival-themed program in the Council Chamber, described as "creative and inclusive" and aimed specifically at families and children in the town of Nocera Superiore, in the province of Salerno.
However, bad weather disrupted the plans: the events scheduled for Saturday, February 14, from the morning entertainment in Piazza Materdomini to the afternoon parade, were postponed. The grand parade of allegorical floats thus took place on Sunday, February 22, starting at 10:00 AM from Via della Libertà, with the two parallel processions that, after crossing the neighborhoods, rejoined in Piazza Marco Polo to reach Corso Matteotti together.
In the meantime, on Tuesday, February 17, Corso Matteotti had already transformed into an open-air stage with «Dancing with the Masks», the initiative that brought together local dance schools with choreography, music, and costumes.
The day of February 22 was also marked by an incident that caused some concern: in the section near the railway crossing on Via Giacomo Matteotti, a float touched the overhead power line and caught fire. There were no injuries; the Nocera Inferiore fire brigade extinguished the flames, and train traffic was temporarily suspended for safety checks.
Nocera Superiore is located in the province of Salerno, in the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese area. By train, the city is served by the Naples–Salerno railway line. By car, it can be reached via the A3 Naples–Salerno motorway; during the parade days, streets along the route are closed to traffic, so it is best to arrive early and park in the peripheral areas. The nearest airports are Salerno Costa d'Amalfi and Naples Capodichino.
Free admission to all events: parades, entertainment, and performances take place in public spaces and do not require tickets or reservations.
