About Nocera Carnival

The Nocera Carnival is the major February festival in Nocera Inferiore, located in the heart of the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese area in the province of Salerno. Five allegorical floats, crafted by local neighborhood associations, parade through the city and the neighboring town of Pagani, accompanied by hundreds of costumed dancers, music, and confetti. In Piazza Diaz, the municipality hosts the Nuceria Carneval, two days dedicated to children, schools, and families featuring entertainment, photo contests, and concerts. Free admission.

The Nocera Carnival: When the neighborhoods take to the streets

In Nocera Inferiore, a town in the province of Salerno, Campania, the Carnival is not just a folkloric interlude but a moment when the city truly comes together. The Nocera Carnival is born from the hard work of neighborhood associations: Sant'Anna di Fiano, Fosso Imperatore, Cicalesi, San Mauro, and Piedimonte build allegorical floats every year, parading them first through their respective districts and then throughout the city. The event has roots dating back to the post-war period and has been held consistently since the early 2000s, reaching its twentieth edition in 2026.

Allegorical floats and neighborhood associations

The heart of the festival lies in the five floats, created over months of work in neighborhood warehouses. Each float involves between one hundred and one hundred and fifty people: about thirty dedicated to construction and a hundred in the dance groups accompanying the float during parades. In total, nearly three thousand people are involved across the area, a testament to how deeply rooted the event is in the social fabric of the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese. These groups unite under the Nocera Carnival Association, chaired by Pasquale Gambardella, which coordinates dates and routes with municipal administrations.

Nuceria Carneval: Piazza Diaz for children and families

Alongside the parades, the Municipality of Nocera Inferiore organizes the Nuceria Carneval, the institutional part of the festival that transforms Piazza Diaz into a large open-air stage. The program is designed for the little ones: entertainment, school participation, a vibrant explosion of color with a simultaneous launch of confetti distributed for free to children, a photo contest that blends the tradition of masks with digital voting, the crowning of the most beautiful costume, and an evening concert. All events are free to attend.

Parades between Nocera Inferiore and Pagani

The geography of the festival is fluid, involving multiple municipalities in the Agro area. The floats are presented in Piazza Diaz and then taken to the neighborhoods; on Carnival Sunday, they parade in the morning in Pagani and in the afternoon in Nocera Inferiore for the Neighborhood Festival; on Shrove Tuesday, the highlight is the final parade in the center of Pagani. Discussions between associations and the administration regarding authorized routes are a recurring theme of recent editions—a sign of how much the community cares about its festival.

A tradition of the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese

The Agro Carnival is a phenomenon that spans the entire area north of Salerno, including Nocera Inferiore, Nocera Superiore, Pagani, and Sarno, where allegorical float parades continue for two weeks. The construction of the floats, the neighborhood dance groups, and the friendly rivalry between districts are part of a Campanian popular culture that also finds expression in patronal feasts and food festivals. For those visiting Campania in February, it is a chance to see the region far from the classic tourist circuits of the coast.

Atmosphere and visiting tips

  • The festival is designed for families: confetti, masks, and entertainment fill the city center during the day.
  • The float parades attract large crowds along the streets: it is advisable to arrive early and explore on foot.
  • Piazza Diaz is the reference point for the Nocera Inferiore program, while the final parade takes place in Pagani.
  • All events in the square are free and held outdoors.

Nocera Carnival — edition 2026

The twentieth edition of the Nocera Carnival took place on February 15 and 17, 2026, featuring the Nuceria Carneval in Piazza Diaz, Nocera Inferiore: a Sunday dedicated to children and schools with a colorful celebration at noon, and Shrove Tuesday with costumed artists, a costume contest, and a concert. In parallel, the five neighborhood allegorical floats paraded in Pagani and Nocera Inferiore for the Neighborhood Festival.

Twentieth edition between Piazza Diaz and the neighborhoods

The 2026 edition marked the twentieth anniversary of the Nocera Carnival, a tradition dating back to the post-war era and revived consistently since the early 2000s. The Municipality of Nocera Inferiore structured the institutional program around two days in Piazza Diaz, titled Nuceria Carneval, while the Nocera Carnival Association brought five allegorical floats created by neighborhood associations to the streets.

Two days, two perspectives

Sunday was dedicated to children, with schools taking center stage and free confetti distribution; Shrove Tuesday concluded the festival with entertainment, awards, and live music. The final float parade took place in the center of Pagani, following the well-established formula that involves multiple municipalities in the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese area.
