Traditional folk serenades and the St. John's festival in the ancient village of Noci
Every year, between June 23rd and 24th, the historic center of Noci, in the Province of Bari, comes alive for one of the community's most cherished traditions: the Night of Serenades and the St. John's Neighborhood Festival. Two distinct moments linked by the same thread of devotion to St. John the Baptist and the folk memory that accompanies the transition from spring to summer—traditionally considered one of the most romantic times of the year.
On the evening of June 23rd, the gnostre (the typical courtyards and alleys of Noci's old town), streets, and squares fill with music and song. Folk groups and musicians wander through the historic center, creating an atmosphere suspended in time, evoking the ancient custom of serenades: once upon a time, musicians would travel through the town to bring well-wishes to anyone named Giovanni, and the celebrants would reciprocate by organizing convivial moments of gratitude. It is a tradition rooted in Apulian folk culture that, after regaining momentum in the mid-eighties, continues to be passed down from generation to generation.
On June 24th, the day dedicated to the Saint, the festivities move into the rioni (neighborhoods) and districts of the town: the St. John's Neighborhood Festival is a moment of collective participation that renews the sense of belonging and shared memory among the inhabitants. The community itself, from one neighborhood to another, brings the celebration to life through meetings, conviviality, and rituals linked to the figure of the Baptist.
The celebration intertwines with other customs widespread throughout the Murgia and the Apulian countryside, such as the gathering of unripe walnuts for the preparation of nocino liqueur and the propitiatory rituals linked to the water of St. John. These are ancient gestures that tell of the deep relationship between the territory, its people, and the cycles of nature.
The Night of Serenades and the St. John's Neighborhood Festival are part of the rich Noci Summer program, the summer festival promoted by the Municipality of Noci that accompanies residents and visitors with events featuring culture, music, theater, sports, and tradition. It is an opportunity to discover one of the most characteristic villages in the Bari hinterland, where serenades and the local patronal festival remain among the most authentic expressions of local identity.
On June 23rd, 2026, starting at 8:00 PM, the historic center of Noci resonated once again with folk music and songs. Folk groups and musicians enlivened the gnostre, streets, and squares of the old town, evoking the custom of serenades once performed under the windows of those celebrating their name day. The following evening, June 24th, the St. John's Neighborhood Festival renewed the community bond with the celebration in the various districts. Both events were part of the 2026 Noci Summer program, the Municipality's summer festival featuring a rich calendar of culture, music, theater, sports, and tradition.
