The independent music and sound experimentation festival at the Ex Macello in Putignano
Sonic Town is the original and independent music festival that transforms the Ex Macello Comunale in Putignano, in the province of Bari, into one of Puglia's most intriguing sound laboratories every summer. Curated by Radio JP in collaboration with the I MAKE Consortium, the event has made experimentation and collective creation its hallmark, offering a stage to artists who would rarely find space in commercial circuits.
The heart of the festival is the Ex Macello on Via Santa Caterina da Siena, a former municipal slaughterhouse that has been reclaimed and regenerated to become a cultural landmark for the city. This space, combined with the summer climate of the Bari Murgia, gives Sonic Town an intimate and underground atmosphere: only a few meters separate the audience from the artists, turning every evening into an immersive and participatory listening experience.
The program spans diverse genres and languages: from electronic to indie music, experimental sounds, and jazz or post-rock influences. Each edition is built around a theme that defines its identity and hosts collaborations with collectives, independent labels, and other cultural entities from the Apulian region and beyond. The festival features DJ sets, live performances, and discussion sessions, creating a journey that blends artistic research with a strong sense of community.
Active for several years, the festival is organized by Radio JP, a radio and cultural entity operating in Putignano since 2014, which has turned it into a staple of the local summer. A focus on accessibility, inclusion, and participation is an integral part of the project: Sonic Town is not just a concert lineup, but a way of experiencing music as a collective endeavor. For audiences seeking something different from large commercial events, it is an unmissable stop on the alternative scene in Puglia.
For its tenth anniversary, Sonic Town chooses the theme of Electric Flow: a continuous current that connects genres, languages, and people. Three evenings are scheduled at the Ex Macello, each built in collaboration with a different entity from the independent music scene. Unlike previous free-entry editions, the 2026 edition introduces an affordable ticket price, with a subscription option for those who want to attend all dates.
The third evening is dedicated to artists from the independent label Maple Death Records (Bologna/London).
The evenings are held at the Ex Macello Comunale, Via Santa Caterina da Siena snc, in Putignano (BA). The venue is located in the urban center and is within walking distance of the historic old town.
By car: Putignano is connected to the SS100 Bari-Taranto road and is approximately 40 km from Bari. By train: the city is served by the Ferrovie del Sud Est with connections from Bari. The nearest airport is Bari-Palese Karol Wojtyła.
Paid entry: single-evening tickets and three-day passes are available online. Advance booking is recommended.
