A food and wine festival in the historic center of Giuliano di Lecce, in the heart of Salento

The Night of Ancient Flavors is one of the most beloved food and wine festivals in the Salento summer calendar. Every August, the historic center of Giuliano di Lecce, a hamlet in the municipality of Castrignano del Capo, transforms into a journey of taste and tradition. The stone alleys and courtyards of the village open their doors to residents and visitors for an evening dedicated to rustic cuisine, local wines, and the folk music of Salento.
Giuliano is located just a few kilometers from Santa Maria di Leuca, at the southern tip of the Salento peninsula, about 130 meters above sea level. According to tradition, the village was founded by the Roman centurion Giuliano, who was granted these lands; even today, ancient Latin inscriptions can be seen on the facades of the houses. Since the Norman era, Giuliano has enjoyed administrative autonomy, known as the Universitas. This thousand-year history provides the backdrop for the festival, which takes place right in the narrow streets of the historic core.
The heart of the event lies in the food and wine stalls, where you can sample recipes from the humble Salento kitchen. Signature local dishes include "ma renna" (bread fried in olive oil with turnip greens and fava beans seasoned with garlic and chili) and wild vegetable "fritta," not to mention almond-based desserts. The tastings are paired with local wines and typical regional products, alongside Salento handicrafts displayed along the route.
The evening is about more than just food: the village comes alive with live music, pizzica and folk bands, street performers, and the characteristic "open courtyards"—private spaces that become meeting points and stages for one night. The atmosphere peaks late in the evening when traditional Salento melodies blend with DJ sets, turning Giuliano into a small open-air stage.
The Night of Ancient Flavors is part of the rich summer calendar of the Municipality of Castrignano del Capo, in the Province of Lecce, Salento (Apulia). Every summer, the municipality hosts dozens of events across its hamlets: Castrignano, Salignano, Giuliano, and Santa Maria di Leuca. For the public, it is an opportunity to discover an authentic village, far from the crowds of the seaside resorts, and to experience the most genuine side of Salento—the one of ancient flavors and local hospitality.
The dates for the 2026 edition of the Night of Ancient Flavors have not yet been announced. The event is traditionally held in August; the detailed program, including the date and musical schedule, will be announced by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
