Italy's longest New Year's Eve: ten hours of music across two squares and fireworks over the sea
In Amalfi, the heart of the Amalfi Coast in the province of Salerno (Campania), the New Year's celebration doesn't end with the midnight toast. With NYE Amalfi, the ancient maritime republic stages over ten consecutive hours of entertainment, spread across two squares and two days. This is why the event is known as "Italy's longest New Year's Eve," a format consolidated by the Municipality of Amalfi that attracts crowds from across the Sorrento-Amalfi peninsula, Salerno, and Naples.
The festival action unfolds between Piazza Duomo, at the foot of the famous Cathedral of Sant'Andrea, and Piazza Flavio Gioia, overlooking the harbor. The afternoon of December 31st kicks off with music in Piazza Duomo; in the evening, the focus shifts to the seafront for the main show; after midnight, the party returns to Piazza Duomo to dance until dawn. In between, the most anticipated moment: the fireworks over the sea, managed by the historic Pirotecnica Cav. Vincenzo Senatore e figli firm, reflecting on the water and the houses clinging to the coast. Images of Amalfi's midnight display are featured every year on national television.
Amalfi's New Year's Eve weaves together stage performance and liturgy: on the evening of December 31st, the Cathedral hosts Holy Mass and the singing of the Te Deum of thanksgiving, while a pontifical mass is scheduled for January 1st. In the following days, the city welcomes the new year with folk group performances in the streets, concerts, and, on January 6th, the Epiphany procession with zampognari (bagpipers).
New Year's Eve is the highlight of a much broader program that spans from early December to the Epiphany: illuminations in the alleys and stairways, artistic nativity scenes and living nativity scenes, Christmas markets in Piazza Municipio and the Cloister of the Capuchins, concerts, theatrical performances, neighborhood tombolas, and local gastronomic competitions. A program designed for both residents and visitors, which in recent years has brought record numbers of attendees and off-season overnight stays to Amalfi.
Spending New Year's Eve in Amalfi means seeing the Coast in its most intimate version: without the summer traffic, with boats in the harbor, lemons still on the trees, and a historic center accessible only on foot. The outdoor shows are free, and the party is designed for a diverse audience, from families with children in the afternoon to younger crowds at night. It is one of the best opportunities to discover Campania in winter, combining the sea, UNESCO heritage, and popular traditions.
Amalfi's 2026 New Year's Eve kicked off on the afternoon of December 31, 2025, at 3:30 PM with the Happy Music Selection by DJ Eddie J Warner in Piazza Duomo, and concluded at dawn on the first day of the year after over ten hours of music across two squares. The special guest of the night was Nicolò De Devitiis, television personality from Le Iene and Battiti Live, who hosted karaoke from 10:30 PM in Piazza Flavio Gioia alongside DJ Fabio Anastasio and vocalist Francesca Faratro.
Before midnight, the local folk group 'O Guagliunciello took the stage with traditional songs and instruments; as the clock struck twelve, the sky above the harbor lit up with the fireworks display over the sea by the Pirotecnica Cav. Vincenzo Senatore e figli firm, broadcast by national television. From 12:30 AM, the party moved to Piazza Duomo with The Muppets, one of Italy's most sought-after party bands, and DJ Filippo Di Costanzo until dawn.
On January 1, 2026, at noon, the Arsenale della Repubblica hosted the Grand New Year's Concert by the S.C.S. International Harmonia Chamber Orchestra, in collaboration with the Società Concerti di Sorrento. In the afternoon, the streets of the historic center were enlivened by parades of folk groups - the Gruppo Folk Pogerolese, Gli Amici di Masaniello, and 'O Guagliunciello - until the evening. All outdoor shows were free to attend.
By car along the SS163 Amalfitana, with limited paid parking available: traffic restrictions are in place in the center on the evening of December 31st, so it is best to arrive early. By train to Salerno or Vietri sul Mare, then take the SITA Sud bus to Amalfi (Salerno-Amalfi line) or services from Sorrento. By plane from Naples-Capodichino and Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi airports. In summer and peak periods, maritime connections are also available, but service is reduced at the end of December: check schedules before departing.
Shows in Piazza Duomo and Piazza Flavio Gioia are free, as are the midnight fireworks, which can be seen from the entire seafront. Some indoor events in the Christmas program may require reservations or tickets.
Book accommodation and New Year's Eve dinner well in advance: during the New Year period, hotels and restaurants on the Coast are fully booked. Wear comfortable shoes for the stairs and alleys, dress in layers for winter (you will be outdoors in the square for hours), and pay attention to return bus schedules, which are often reinforced but not continuous. The full day-by-day program is published by the Municipality of Amalfi in the weeks prior.
