Two evenings of anchovies, squid, and folk music in Piazzale Marinella, on the Amalfi Coast
Every summer, towards the end of August, Atrani transforms into an open-air restaurant. As Italy's smallest municipality by area, nestled between the cliffs and the sea on the Amalfi Coast in the province of Salerno, it dedicates two evenings to the staple that fed its seafaring families for centuries: blue fish. The Blue Fish Festival, also known as "Flavors of the Sea," is one of the most anticipated events of the Atrani summer calendar, attracting thousands of visitors from across Campania and abroad every year.
The festival's core is the coastal "cucina povera"โthe humble, flavorful Mediterranean catch. Anchovies, sardines, mackerel, and squid are prepared using recipes passed down through generations, without fuss and using local ingredients. Signature dishes that have defined the tasting experience over the years include:
Stands are set up along the village's main street, the waterfront, and especially in Piazzale Marinella, the heart of the festivities overlooking the beach. Traditionally, the event opens at 7:30 PM for international guests accustomed to earlier dining, while the main festivities and performances begin at 8:30 PM. In 2025, a dedicated gluten-free stand was introduced for the first time, a commitment to inclusivity that the municipal administration considers a core part of the festival's identity, ensuring everyone can join the table.
The culinary experience is always accompanied by a program of free performances. Campanian folk music groups, tarantella dancers, folk ensembles, and roving theatrical acts animate the historic center, turning small squares, arches, and stairways into an authentic open-air theater. Concerts are held in Piazzale Marinella with free admission; you only pay for the food. Over the years, the format has featured dance nights, electronic folk shows, and theatrical performances spread across the square, the beach, and the rocks.
The festival is organized by the Municipality of Atrani with the support of local associations and, above all, dozens of volunteersโlocal families and youthโwho handle the setup, cooking, and service. At the end of the 2025 edition, the administration publicly thanked the volunteers, law enforcement, civil protection, and local businesses for their work, and the residents for their patience: for two days, parking along Via dei Dogi is suspended, and the village literally opens its doors to the festival.
With just over half a square kilometer of surface area and fewer than a thousand inhabitants, Atrani is a maze of arches, stairways, and white houses clustered around Piazza Umberto I and the church of San Salvatore de' Birecto. Together with neighboring Amalfi, it is part of the UNESCO-recognized Amalfi Coast landscape. Visiting the village during the festival means seeing it in its most authentic and vibrant form, far removed from the quick transit of tourist buses: tables stretch out onto the beach, and in the evening, the scent of grilled fish mingles with the sea salt.
The event is traditionally held in the second half of August over two consecutive evenings. The 2025 edition took place on August 23rd and 24th; for 2026, the Municipality of Atrani has confirmed the dates of Saturday, August 22nd and Sunday, August 23rd, including the festival in the events calendar presented in July. It remains one of the most iconic summer gastronomic events on the Amalfi Coast and in the entire Campania region.
The Municipality of Atrani has included the Blue Fish Festival in the 2026 events calendar presented in July, confirming the dates of Saturday, August 22nd and Sunday, August 23rd. The administration describes the event as one of the most anticipated dates in the Atrani calendar, capable of attracting thousands of visitors every year thanks to the combination of gastronomy, maritime tradition, and entertainment.
The format, consolidated over the years, includes the evening opening of stands along the village's main street and in Piazzale Marinella, with a tasting tour dedicated to the blue fish of the Amalfi Coast, followed by concerts and roving performances in the historic center. The detailed program, including artist names and times, has not yet been made public: the Municipality has announced that dates and guests for the various summer events will be communicated progressively. This page will be updated as soon as the full program is available.
By car โ Atrani can be reached via the SS163 Amalfitana state road, just a few hundred meters from Amalfi. The village is pedestrian-only, and parking is extremely limited and paid; during the festival, parking along Via dei Dogi is suspended. It is best to leave your car in Amalfi or in coastal parking lots and continue on foot.
By bus โ Bus lines running along the Amalfi Coast connect Atrani with Amalfi, Salerno, Positano, and Sorrento; the Amalfi stop is a ten-minute walk from the center of Atrani via the pedestrian tunnel on the waterfront.
By train and boat โ The reference train station is Salerno, well-connected to Naples and high-speed rail lines; from there, you can continue by bus or, in summer, by ferry or hydrofoil to Amalfi. The nearest airport is Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi, followed by Naples-Capodichino.
Musical performances in Piazzale Marinella have free admission. You only pay for the food: in 2025, the full tasting menu cost 25 euros per person. Prices for the following edition are announced by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
