Four nights of candles, faith, and spectacle on the Amalfi Coast
Every summer, between August 1st and 4th, the village of Praiano, in the Province of Salerno, suspended between the green of the Lattari Mountains and the blue of the Amalfi Coast, turns off its electric lights to rely on the flickering glow of thousands of candles. The Luminaria di San Domenico is one of the most evocative festivals in Campania: not just a show, but a collective ritual in which the entire town participates, house by house, terrace by terrace.
The devotion of Praiano to Saint Dominic dates back to 1606, when Dominican friars arriving from Naples settled at the monumental complex of Santa Maria a Castro, perched 364 meters above sea level. Tradition says that the saint's mother, before giving birth, dreamed of a dog with a torch in its mouth: a presage of the son who would bring the light of God's word to the world. From that dream of fire, in popular interpretation, comes the deep bond between Saint Dominic and the flames that illuminate the village every year.
The visual heart of the festival is Piazza San Gennaro, whose famous majolica floor is traced by over 3,000 candles arranged along the lines of the pattern. At the sound of the bells from the Convent and the Church of San Gennaro, the Ragazzi della Luminaria (Luminaria Youth) kick off the lighting choreography; immediately after, residents and visitors join in to light the installations scattered throughout the alleys, on the stairways, and along the low walls descending toward the sea. There is no single privileged viewpoint: you walk, you climb, you descend, and the village reveals itself little by little.
Since 2001, set designer Gennaro Amendola gave the event the form we know today, accompanying the devotional tradition with architectural projections on the church facade, light installations, and international fire theater companies. His legacy continues to guide the organization even after his passing, and every edition pays tribute to him.
The Luminaria is registered in the IPIC, the Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Campania, a recognition that certifies its anthropological value in addition to its tourism appeal. It is organized by the Municipality of Praiano together with the Pelagos Association and the San Gennaro Parish, with the support of the Campania Region, the Province of Salerno, the Lattari Mountains Regional Park, and the Amalfi Coast Tourism District.
The atmosphere is intimate yet festive: the scent of wax, bells, voices echoing in the alleys, and the sea reflecting the glow of the flames. All events are free. It is advisable to arrive well in advance, as Piazza San Gennaro fills up quickly and parking along the Amalfi coastal road is limited. Those wishing to climb to the Convent should be prepared for a challenging staircase: comfortable shoes are mandatory, and a flashlight for the return trip.
With just over two thousand inhabitants, Praiano is the most discreet village on the Amalfi Coast, nestled between Positano and Amalfi. Here, the Luminaria is not an event staged for visitors: it is the town's festival, open to those who wish to share it. For this reason, rather than a show to watch, it is an experience to walk through, candle in hand, together with those who live there all year round.
From August 1st to 4th, 2026, Praiano celebrates its most iconic festival. On the first three evenings, the sound of the bells from the Convent and the Church of San Gennaro kicks off the choreography of the Ragazzi della Luminaria and the lighting of over 3,000 candles arranged along the pattern of the square's majolica floor; residents and visitors are invited to light the installations distributed throughout the rest of the town.
On August 2nd, the Church of San Gennaro hosts Per Grazia Ricevuta — Tableaux Vivants, with the Teatri 35 company live-reconstructing the works of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, transforming the nave into the Lombard painter's workshop. On August 4th, the feast day of Saint Dominic, holy masses are celebrated at the Convent, 364 meters above sea level, and the festival closes at 10:30 PM with OLYMPUS — A journey into Antiquity in search of the Rings of Olympus, a fire and acrobatics show by the Belgian company Pyronix Production.
The organization is managed by the Municipality of Praiano with the Pelagos Association and the San Gennaro Parish; the main sponsor of the edition is Hotel Casa Angelina. The event is registered in the IPIC, the Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Campania Region.
Program released by organizers and local press in July 2026; times subject to change.
Praiano is located on the SS163 Amalfitana road, between Positano and Amalfi. By car from Naples, take the motorway to the exit for the Sorrento Peninsula or Vietri sul Mare, then continue along the coast (about an hour and a quarter from Naples, summer traffic permitting). SITA Sud buses connect Praiano with Amalfi, Positano, Sorrento, and Salerno.
Parking spaces along the main road are limited and paid: on the evenings of the Luminaria, it is highly recommended to leave your car outside the center and reach the square on foot.
Evening religious celebrations precede the lighting of the candles (Rosary at 7:00 PM and Mass at 7:30 PM). The path leading up to the Convent of Santa Maria a Castro is closed at 10:00 PM for safety reasons: those wishing to go up should do so in the afternoon or early evening.
Free admission to all events, both religious and performance-based.
Comfortable shoes for steep stairways and alleys, a small flashlight, and if possible, an overnight stay in town: hotels and B&Bs in Praiano and nearby Positano should be booked many months in advance for the first weekend of August.
