About Chamber and Jazz Music

From May to October, Praiano transforms its historic chapels, palaces, and seaside squares into open-air concert halls. Praiano Chamber and Jazz Music weaves together chamber music, jazz, opera, and Neapolitan song across a dozen free-admission events, curated by artistic director Carmine Laino, principal double bass of the Teatro San Carlo in Naples. An intimate festival where the landscape of the Amalfi Coast becomes part of the score.

A festival bringing classical music to the streets of Praiano

Praiano Chamber and Jazz Music is the annual concert season that, from May to October, brings the town of Praiano to life in the province of Salerno, in the heart of the Amalfi Coast in Campania. Founded in 2022 by double bassist Carmine Laino, principal double bass of the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, the festival has grown with every edition to become one of the most anticipated cultural events of the Amalfi summer.

The concept is simple yet radical: to take chamber music and jazz out of traditional concert halls and return them to the everyday settings of a village of just over two thousand inhabitants. Local chapels, noble palaces, churchyards, and squares become collective listening spaces where the audience sits just meters away from the performers.

A repertoire spanning three centuries

The programming defies genre boundaries. The concert schedule brings together classical chamber music—Mozart, Beethoven, Paganini, Rossini, Puccini—with great operatic works, swing, contemporary jazz, Neapolitan song, and Southern Italian folk music. The performers are largely drawn from the Teatro San Carlo orchestra and the Cimarosa Conservatory of Avellino, joined by emerging young local ensembles.

  • Chamber music: string and piano trios, violin duos, saxophone quartets, wind quintets
  • Jazz: from 1920s and 30s swing to contemporary formations, featuring orchestras and small ensembles
  • Opera: opera galas under the stars, with soloists accompanied by piano
  • Neapolitan tradition: tributes to classic Neapolitan song, mandolins, and folk repertoire

The venues: landscape as a backdrop

Each concert has its own carefully chosen setting. The Congrega del Rosario, with its intimate acoustics, hosts the most personal chamber music events. Palazzo Zingone and Villa Maria Pia Zingone open their gardens for jazz evenings. Piazza San Luca Evangelista and Piazza San Gennaro, overlooking the gulf, host the most popular concerts, often at sunset, when the light on the sea provides a counterpoint to the music. Several hotels and private homes also open their doors for the occasion, in the true spirit of coastal hospitality.

Free admission, with booking

One of the festival's hallmarks is that all events are free: the association, supported by the patronage of the Municipality of Praiano, has chosen from the start not to charge for tickets. However, several concerts take place in limited-capacity spaces and require advance booking to ensure the best listening experience; therefore, booking via Eventbrite or by contacting the organizers directly is highly recommended.

Praiano, between Positano and Amalfi

Nestled between Positano and Amalfi, on the side facing the Faraglioni of Capri, Praiano has preserved a more authentic and less touristy identity compared to its neighbors. The festival has become one of its most recognizable cultural voices, capable of attracting both local audiences and international visitors without losing its village charm. Those who attend do not just watch a concert: they walk through the alleys, sit in a small square, and listen to Beethoven or a jazz theme while the sun sets behind the coast. It is this combination of musical quality and genius loci that makes the experience difficult to replicate elsewhere.

Chamber and Jazz Music — edition 2026

The 2026 concert season of Praiano Chamber and Jazz Music opens on May 30th at the Congrega del Rosario and closes on October 11th, with a dozen events spread across chapels, historic palaces, and seaside squares. A journey ranging from Beethoven and Mozart to pop legends, from swing to opera galas under the stars, and tributes to Neapolitan song. All concerts are free, with some limited-seating events requiring booking.

The 2026 Edition

The fourth season of Praiano Chamber and Jazz Music spans five months, from May 30th to October 11th, 2026, confirming the formula that has made the festival recognizable: short and intense concerts, intimate settings, and free admission. The program alternates between chamber music groups and jazz bands, with forays into opera and the Neapolitan repertoire.

The common thread declared by the organization is the dialogue between eras and languages: moving from great European composers—Beethoven, Mozart, Puccini—to contemporary crossovers between jazz, pop, and singer-songwriter music. A path designed for a broad audience that does not require specialized knowledge to be enjoyed.

The evenings take place at different times depending on the season: starting at 8:30 PM in late May, moving to 9:30 PM in the height of summer to take advantage of the cool evening air, and returning to 7:30 PM in autumn as the sun sets earlier. A schedule that follows the natural rhythm of the Coast.
