The charitable January 1st dip in the sea of Brindisi
The New Year's Day Plunge has become one of the most anticipated events of the first day of the year in Brindisi, in the heart of Salento and Puglia. Every January 1st, while much of Italy is still at the table, hundreds of people gather on the northern coast of the city to immerse themselves in the cold winter waters of the Adriatic Sea. It is not just a dare: it has become a collective ritual that unites sport, popular tradition, and solidarity, capable of attracting participants and spectators from across the province and far beyond regional borders.
The natural setting for the event is the coves of Brindisi's northern coastline: the historic Conca and the nearby Cala Materdomini, beaches that welcome bathers in the summer and transform into the stage for the plunge on New Year's Day. The choice of location may vary from year to year depending on weather and sea conditions: when the wind and sea are too rough, the organizers move the gathering to the more sheltered cove of Materdomini to ensure the safety of the participants.
The New Year's Day Plunge is organized by the Summer Time - Animazione & Spettacolo group, with a strong focus on charity: the funds raised through registrations are donated every year to a charitable project linked to the Brindisi area. The registrations are accompanied by prize draws, the blessing of the waters, underwater and aerial filming, and live coverage by local broadcasters, while thousands of spectators crowd the beach to witness the countdown and the collective immersion.
Born as a fun challenge between friends, over the years the plunge has grown into an event of international scope: among the participants, there are regularly foreign citizens and tourists who choose Brindisi to inaugurate the year with a gesture of courage and joy. The mild climate of Southern Italy makes the experience less prohibitive than plunges in Northern Europe, while still remaining a test of temperament that is anything but trivial in the middle of winter.
Hosting the New Year's Day Plunge is a way for Brindisi to open the tourist year and enhance its relationship with the sea, an identifying element of the Adriatic capital and the entire Puglia region. The event is now part of the city's winter festival calendar, between the New Year's Eve celebrations in the square and the first events of the year, and contributes to keeping the image of a city overlooking the sea alive even out of season.
The sixteenth edition of the New Year's Day Plunge took place in Brindisi on January 1st, 2026, surpassing all previous records with 586 registered participants, including 206 women and 40 minors. Due to strong winds, the location was moved from the Conca to the more sheltered Cala Materdomini, where around 11:00 AM the blessing of the waters, conducted by Father Adriano Miglietta, the countdown, and the collective plunge took place, followed live by local broadcasters.
Organized by the Summer Time - Animazione & Spettacolo group, the 2026 edition allocated the funds raised to the «Psiconcologia in corsia» project of the Mattia Passante association, supporting patients suffering from brain tumors treated by the Neurosurgery department of the Perrino Hospital. Among the participants were registrants from the United Kingdom, Scotland, Switzerland, the United States, Albania, and Poland, as well as new divers from Norway, Spain, and Egypt, confirming the increasingly international scope of the event.
The plunge takes place on the northern coast of Brindisi, between the Conca and the beach of Cala Materdomini. The final location is announced by the organizers in the days leading up to the event based on sea conditions.
Brindisi can be reached by train (central station on the Adriatic line), by car via the SS16 and SS379, and by plane thanks to the Salento Airport. From the city center, the northern coast can be reached in a few minutes by car.
Registration for the plunge requires a charitable donation and must be completed in the days prior to the event. Participation as a spectator is free and open to everyone. The gathering is generally scheduled for the morning of January 1st, with the plunge taking place around 11:00 AM.
