A summer evening of gastronomy and solidarity in San Donaci
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of the Salento summer, San Donaci, a small town in the province of Brindisi, Apulia, celebrates one of its most cherished events: the Panino Festival. This is more than just a food fair; it is a charitable event that weaves together excellent street food with a deep sense of community and spirituality.
The event traditionally takes place on a warm late-August evening at Parco Karol Wojtyła on Via Machiavelli, where families and visitors gather to share long tables under the summer sky of Salento.
The heart of the festival is, of course, the hot stuffed sandwich, prepared in numerous variations that showcase the genuine flavors of the Apulian tradition. The stalls offer:
all accompanied by local wine and refreshing drinks such as water, beer, orange soda, and soft drinks. It is the simple, winning formula of a village festival, where the quality of products and conviviality matter above all else.
The Panino Festival is promoted by the Associazione Amici di Mamma Nina, with the patronage of the Municipality of San Donaci. The association, founded in 2007, preserves and spreads the spiritual legacy of Domenica Crocifissa 'Nina' Lolli (1911-2006), a beloved religious figure and Franciscan tertiary linked to Padre Pio, who dedicated her life to charitable works for the poor, minors, and mothers in difficulty.
The proceeds from the event support the association's charitable activities and the beatification cause of Mamma Nina, the Roman phase of which opened in 2022. Participating in the festival means enjoying a delicious sandwich while contributing to a cause that is central to the deep identity of the San Donaci community.
The Panino Festival is part of a rich summer calendar for this small Salento town, which in August also hosts the patronal feast in honor of Saint Vincent Ferrer and Saint Mary of Grace, as well as the Antichi Sapori Fest food and wine exhibition. The San Donaci area is well-known for its winemaking tradition and the authentic flavors of Salento cuisine.
Information regarding the 2026 edition of the Panino Festival in San Donaci will be published as soon as the Associazione Amici di Mamma Nina announces the date. While awaiting the official program, you can refer to the previous edition, held in August at Parco Karol Wojtyła with sausage, capocollo, ventresca, and frankfurter sandwiches, wine, and drinks, in a charitable evening.
The festival takes place at Parco Karol Wojtyła, on Via Machiavelli, in San Donaci (BR), Apulia. The area is outdoors and easily accessible on foot from the town center.
By car: San Donaci is located along the SS7ter road, between Brindisi and Lecce; the recommended exit is from the SS613 Brindisi-Lecce. By train: the San Donaci station is served by the Adriatic line (Bari-Lecce). Nearest airport: Brindisi-Salento, approximately 30 km away.
Admission to the festival area is free. Sandwiches, wine, and drinks can be purchased on-site at affordable prices; all proceeds go to charity.
