The itinerant living nativity in the historic center of Montagnareale
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The "Journey to Bethlehem" Living Nativity is one of the most heartfelt Christmas events in the Nebrodi area. It takes place in the heart of the historic center of Montagnareale, a small town in the Province of Messina, Sicily, which is completely transformed into an evocative representation of Bethlehem during the Christmas season. The village's stone streets and alleys become a scenic route, illuminated by lanterns and fires, along which the spectator walks, immersing themselves in the Christmas atmosphere.
Unlike static nativity scenes, "Journey to Bethlehem" is an itinerant show: the public is guided through corners of the town transformed into small period sets, where scenes of Christmas tradition unfold. Over fifty performers, all local residents, wear meticulously detailed costumes and bring ancient crafts, scenes of daily life, and moments of the Nativity to life. The performance is enriched by original music and dances, created specifically for the event, making it an engaging experience with a strong emotional impact.
The living nativity of Montagnareale was born as a collective project, an act of love towards the community's roots and the universal message of Christmas. The organization involves volunteers, local associations, and the entire town in a shared effort that renews the inhabitants' bond with their traditions every year. The December 2025 edition marked the third edition of the event, a sign of a young tradition already rooted in the Sicilian holiday calendar.
Montagnareale rises on a hill overlooking the Tyrrhenian coast of Messina, in a landscape of olive groves and ancient paths typical of the Nebrodi hinterland. The living nativity performance enhances this context, offering visitors not only a show but also the opportunity to discover an authentic Sicilian village in its most evocative atmosphere. The event is free, with mandatory booking, and attracts visitors from all over the province and beyond.
The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced; the event is traditionally held during the Christmas period, at the end of December.
The 2026 edition of the Montagnareale living nativity is expected, as per tradition, during the Christmas period. At the moment, the organizers have not yet announced the dates and the program. Information will be published on the event's official channels in the weeks leading up to the event.
Montagnareale is located in the hinterland of the Tyrrhenian coast of Messina. By car, take the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, exit at Patti-San Piero Patti, and continue inland. The nearest train station is Patti-San Piero Patti, on the Tyrrhenian line.
