The magic of Christmas through songs and traditions in the medieval village of Ficarra
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of the Nebrodi Mountains, at an altitude of approximately 450 metres between the valleys of the Naso and Brolo streams, the medieval village of Ficarra (province of Messina, Sicily) welcomes the Christmas season each year with its Christmas concerts. Promoted by the Municipality of Ficarra, these events transform the town's churches and halls into spaces of music, reflection, and shared celebration, perfectly in line with the identity of a village known for its network of scattered museums and strong cultural vocation.
At the heart of the programme is the grand musical show dedicated to the Sicilian Nativity, performed by the Sikania minor deus company, heirs to the Nebrodi mandolin musical project. The performance, titled "Songs, Stories, and Dances of the Nativity in Sicily," weaves together folk music, storytelling, and dance to convey all the sacredness and beauty of the island's Christmas, following a tradition rooted in the Sicilian devotional and peasant repertoire.
Ficarra is one of the most fascinating villages in the Nebrodi area: Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa stayed here in the summer of 1943, and it houses the Church of Maria SS. Annunziata, which features the famous 16th-century statue of the Annunciation by Antonello Gagini. During the holidays, the town also comes alive with local confectionery specialties, such as buccellato ficarrese and sfince sprinkled with sugar, which are an integral part of the local Christmas gastronomic traditions.
The Christmas Concert is a fixed appointment on Ficarra's winter calendar: a moment of gathering for the locals and an opportunity for visitors to discover the village in its most intimate and evocative guise. Through sacred music, folk songs, and the atmosphere of historic churches, the event tells the story of the deep bond between the Ficarra community and its Christmas traditions.
The 2026 edition of the Ficarra Christmas Concert has not yet been officially scheduled. Based on previous years' events, the Christmas festivities in this Nebrodi village are usually held in the second half of December, within the historic churches and halls of the town. The detailed programme, including locations and times, will be published by the Municipality of Ficarra closer to the holidays.
Ficarra is located in the Nebrodi Mountains, in the province of Messina. By car, it can be reached via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, taking the Brolo or Capo d'Orlando exit, then continuing along the provincial roads towards the interior. The nearest train station is Brolo-Ficarra-Capo d'Orlando, on the Tyrrhenian line.
The events take place during the Christmas season, generally in the second half of December. For updated dates and times, we recommend checking the Municipality of Ficarra website or contacting the municipal offices.
