During the holiday season, the town of Novara di Sicilia, in the province of Messina, transforms into the Christmas Village: a widespread event that enlivens the medieval historic center of one of Italy's most beautiful villages for weeks, nestled between the Nebrodi and Peloritani mountains in northeastern Sicily. The narrow stone streets, squares, and characteristic corners of the town are adorned with lights, decorated trees, and a fairytale atmosphere that draws visitors from across the province and beyond.
The heart of the initiative is Santa's Watermill, set up inside an ancient watermill in the scenic Contrada Giorginaro. Here, children can meet Santa Claus and his elves amidst workshops, sparkling lights, and live performances. Santa's house is one of the most beloved family attractions, capable of turning a historic mill into a place of pure magic.
In the medieval village, the Christmas markets offer tastings of local products and artisan creations that showcase local knowledge and creativity. The Village of Nativity Scenes comes to life throughout the alleys and squares, featuring exhibitions, light displays, and performances. The program also includes train rides, musical and theatrical shows, book presentations, excursions, fireworks, and numerous activities designed for both adults and children.
Christmas in Novara di Sicilia blends religious and popular traditions: alongside markets and family attractions, the village has hosted a living nativity scene over the years, with actors in period costumes recreating ancient crafts within the historic center's alleys. The event celebrates the town's identity and architectural heritage, offering visitors the chance to discover one of the gems of the province of Messina in its most enchanting form.
The Christmas Village is held every year during the holiday season, typically from early December until Epiphany. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced: it is recommended to check the updated calendar via the Municipality of Novara di Sicilia and the town's official channels.
Novara di Sicilia can be reached by car via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, taking the Falcone-Novara di Sicilia exit and continuing on the SP road to the town center. The nearest airports are Catania-Fontanarossa and Reggio Calabria, while the closest train stations are located along the Tyrrhenian coast.
Admission to the events throughout the village is generally free; some activities at Santa's Watermill may have specific hours (usually in the afternoon). Warm clothing and comfortable shoes are recommended for the stone alleys. For the detailed program and updated hours, please contact the Municipality of Novara di Sicilia.
