About Tirrimulliru Festival

In the medieval heart of Randazzo, on the northern slopes of Mount Etna, the Tirrimulliru Festival celebrates one of the oldest local Christmas pastries in early December: the tirrimulliru, a spiced biscuit made with cooked wine, walnuts, hazelnuts, and cinnamon. Featuring Christmas markets, artisan nativity scenes, and tastings of typical Etna and Nebrodi products, the event transforms the historic center of Randazzo into a showcase of Sicilian winter flavors and traditions.

A festival dedicated to Randazzo's Christmas pastry

The Tirrimulliru Festival is a food and wine celebration that brings the historic center of Randazzo to life every early December. This medieval town, located in the Metropolitan City of Catania, Sicily, sits at 754 meters above sea level on the northern slopes of Mount Etna. The event is dedicated to the tirrimulliru, a signature pastry of the local tradition, prepared for the Christmas season and guarded by generations of local families and bakers.

What is the tirrimulliru?

The tirrimulliru is a biscuit with an intense flavor and an unmistakable aroma. Its main ingredient is vino cotto (cooked wine), combined with crushed nuts (walnuts and hazelnuts) and a hint of cinnamon. Randazzo's bakers offer various versions, some enriched with dried figs and orange pulp. Alongside the tirrimulliru, the festival often celebrates another iconic local sweet, the nuvoletta, completing the delicious portrait of Randazzo's confectionery.

Markets, nativity scenes, and local products

Beyond pastry tastings, the event offers a quintessential Christmas atmosphere that fills the streets and squares of the town center:

  • Christmas markets with stalls featuring handicrafts, gifts, and decorations;
  • Exhibitions of artisan nativity scenes;
  • Tastings of wines and oils from local producers;
  • Typical local products: cheeses, preserves, dried fruits, and cured meats from the Etna and Nebrodi regions.

Randazzo, between Etna and Nebrodi

Randazzo is considered one of the most charming villages at the foot of Mount Etna. Its medieval historic center, built from lava stone, lies on the border between the Etna Park and the Nebrodi Park. The Tirrimulliru Festival highlights this heritage, blending the rediscovery of a traditional sweet with the allure of lava stone architecture and the warmth of a community that turns its gastronomic roots into a tourist attraction during the Advent season.

A staple of the Sicilian winter

Promoted by the Municipality of Randazzo and established in 2014, the festival has become a highly anticipated event in the first week of December, drawing visitors eager to discover a flavor that tells the story of inland Sicily and its rural culture. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced; it is recommended to check the Municipality's official channels for updates.
