The traveling living nativity scene in the medieval village of Piraino
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Paese Presepe is the grand living nativity performance that brings the historic center of Piraino to life every year during the Christmas season. This charming medieval village overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea in the heart of the Nebrodi mountains, in the province of Messina (Sicily). For one evening, the entire old town turns into a true time machine: the alleys, stone cottages, and staircases of the historic center are illuminated by candles and soft lights, while the sound of bagpipes accompanies visitors along the path.
The event is a traveling exhibition that unfolds in the oldest part of the town: from the 14th-century Palazzo Ducale, the path leads to the Sanctuary of the SS. Ecce Homo, ending at the Nativity grotto set up at the top of a scenic staircase. Along the way, you will encounter dozens of living tableaux that recreate not only the sacred representation of the birth of Jesus but also the figures and trades that once animated village life.
The heart of the event is the faithful reconstruction of rural life from the past. The performers, dressed in period costumes, bring to life a gallery of ancient crafts and scenes of daily life:
Reaching its 25th edition in 2025, the event is organized by the Associazione Torre Saracena with the patronage of the Municipality of Piraino and the involvement of the entire local community, which works for months on costumes, sets, and staging. The living nativity is part of the town's broader Christmas festival program, which includes a Christmas village, concerts, and activities for families and children.
Paese Presepe is one of the most heartfelt Christmas events on the Tyrrhenian side of Messina. The setting of the medieval village, the intimate atmosphere of the illuminated alleys, and the care taken in reconstructing ancient crafts make it an experience capable of moving both adults and children, attracting thousands of visitors every year from all over the province of Messina and the Nebrodi area.
The 2026 edition of Paese Presepe in Piraino does not yet have an official date announced. Based on previous years, the traveling living nativity performance takes place at the end of December, during the Christmas holidays, in the village's historic center. It is recommended to check the official channels of the Municipality of Piraino and the Associazione Torre Saracena to learn the date and program as soon as they are released.
