The Nativity comes to life in an olive grove, amidst ancient crafts and the scents of Christmas
The Living Nativity of Terme Vigliatore, located in the municipality of Terme Vigliatore in the province of Messina (Sicily), is one of the most beloved Christmas events on the Tyrrhenian coast of Messina. The event takes place within a gently sloping olive grove along Via Maceo, near the sports field, where colorful wooden huts are set up to house artisan workshops and the Nativity stable.
Along the visitor path, numerous performers strictly in period costume bring a meticulous reproduction of the places and customs of Bethlehem at the time of the Nativity to life. Visitors encounter the workshops and crafts of yesteryear:
Making the scene even more authentic are a characteristic water mill and various traditional farm animals: sheep, goats, horses, chickens, ducks, as well as the ox and the donkey beside the manger.
One of the most appreciated features of the nativity scene is the opportunity to taste typical products prepared live. Specialties include: seasoned bread, sweet fried bread, freshly baked homemade bread, fish meatballs, and above all, fresh ricotta, produced on-site right before the eyes of visitors during the evocative milk processing demonstration.
Created thanks to the commitment of the volunteers of the A.C.S. La Zagara association, the Living Nativity is now a consolidated tradition that attracts visitors from all over the province of Messina and the Tyrrhenian coast. Admission is a symbolic contribution and is accessible to everyone, with prices designed for families. Amidst the scents, sounds, and lights of Christmas, the event offers an immersive experience in Sicilian spirituality and popular culture, ideal for both adults and children.
The Municipality of Terme Vigliatore has confirmed the staging of the new edition of the Living Nativity from December 23, 2026, to January 6, 2027. The event, organized by the A.C.S. La Zagara association, will return to animate the olive grove on Via Maceo with the usual reproduction of ancient Bethlehem: performers in costume, ancient crafts, animals, and tastings of fresh ricotta and homemade bread.
At the moment, the full program, including individual opening days and times, has not yet been published: it will be released by the organizers and the Municipality as the Christmas holidays approach.
The event is held in the olive grove on Via Maceo, in the area of the sports field, in Terme Vigliatore (ME).
By car: take the Falcone-Terme Vigliatore exit on the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, then follow the signs for the town center. By train: Terme Vigliatore station on the Messina-Palermo Tyrrhenian line.
Admission is a symbolic contribution (approx. 2 euros), free for children under 6. Open in the late afternoon and evening. Comfortable clothing and footwear suitable for the olive grove terrain are recommended.
