A living nativity scene in the narrow alleys of the Ciglio hamlet, in Serrara Fontana
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In Serrara Fontana, the highest municipality on the island of Ischia, in Campania (Metropolitan City of Naples), Christmas has a specific address: the hamlet of Ciglio. Here, among narrow alleys and stone houses, the local community stages Nascette 'u Ciglio, a living nativity scene that is not a performance packaged for tourists, but a collective narrative entrusted to the inhabitants themselves, the guardians of an ancient tradition.
The route starts from the provincial road and descends along via Pedicuozzo, the old country path bordered by parracine, the characteristic dry-stone walls that have defined the island's agricultural landscape for centuries. You walk slowly, from scene to scene, until you reach the church of San Ciro, built in 1661 and covered in green tuff from Mount Epomeo: one of the most recognizable religious buildings in all of Ischia, beneath which a spring of fresh water flowing from Epomeo still runs.
The heart of the representation is the revival of the trades that have shaped the history of this corner of the island. Not professional actors, but local people, with hands marked by hard work:
Accompanying the scenes are farm animals — geese, chickens, mules, and sheep — that restore to the hamlet the breath of rural life of the past.
Along the route, the nativity scene also becomes a gastronomic experience: mulled wine, zeppole, beans, sausages, and friarielli, accompanied by local wine. These are the simple dishes of the Epomeo farmhouses, served at rest points set up between one scene and another, where stopping becomes an opportunity for meeting rather than just refreshment.
The central moment of the narrative is the procession of the Three Wise Men, who cross the hamlet in sumptuous robes after passing before the court of King Herod. The Nativity, meanwhile, is set up in a cave-cellar, with hay, straw, and a donkey, and the sound of bagpipes providing a musical backdrop: the first edition featured the Gruppo Zampognari di Esperia. The evening concludes in the church with the repositioning of the Baby Jesus and the choral singing of 'Tu scendi dalle stelle', in an intimate atmosphere.
The event is promoted by the Parish of Santa Maria del Carmine and the Rectory of Santa Maria Assunta e San Giacomo of Ciglio, with the patronage of the Municipality of Serrara Fontana and the coordination of the parish priest, Father Antonio Mazzella. The first edition was held on Friday, December 26, 2025, on St. Stephen's Day, as part of the municipal Christmas program.
In winter, the island of Ischia is a different world: no queues at the ferry terminals, towns returned to their residents, and the silence of the mountains. The Ciglio living nativity is arguably the best way to understand this lesser-known Ischia, the agricultural and hilly side of Serrara Fontana, far from the beaches. The route is downhill and on uneven ground: comfortable shoes and a heavy jacket are essential, as the temperature drops significantly in the evening at this altitude.
At the moment, there are no official communications regarding the 2026 edition of Nascette 'u Ciglio. The first edition, which took place on December 26, 2025, in the hamlet of Ciglio in Serrara Fontana (Metropolitan City of Naples, Campania), involved the entire community of the hamlet and was included in the municipal Christmas program.
If the event is repeated, it is reasonable to expect the same placement during the holiday season, with the route along via Pedicuozzo leading to the church of San Ciro. However, no dates, times, or program details are confirmed as of today: this page will be updated as soon as the Parish of Santa Maria del Carmine, the Rectory of Santa Maria Assunta e San Giacomo, or the Municipality of Serrara Fontana publish the official calendar.
Ischia can be reached by ferry or hydrofoil from the ports of Naples (Molo Beverello, Calata Porta di Massa) and Pozzuoli. From the port of Ischia, the hamlet of Ciglio can be reached by public bus (direction Serrara Fontana / Panza) or by car along the provincial road to Ciglio.
In the 2025 edition, a free shuttle service was active, departing from the Ferrunia area (Ciglio-Panza junction) and the Martofa area (Serrara). The alleys of the hamlet are not accessible to cars: it is best to leave your vehicle in the areas indicated by the organizers and continue on foot or by shuttle.
Admission is free. The route includes sloping roads and uneven ground, which are not very suitable for strollers or those with mobility issues: closed, non-slip shoes, winter clothing, and a flashlight are recommended. It is best to arrive at opening time to enjoy the scenes calmly before the evening crowds.
