The Nativity comes to life in the ancient villages of the Phlegraean Fields
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
During the Christmas season, from late December through Epiphany, the Municipality of Bacoli brings its ancient villages to life with a series of living nativity scenes organized by local parishes and associations. Rather than a single event, this is a widespread tradition that spans various districts of the Phlegraean town, in the province of Naples, offering the community a taste of the most authentic Campanian Christmas atmosphere.
The most famous living nativity takes place at the Casina Vanvitelliana, the elegant Bourbon hunting lodge that reflects on the waters of Lake Fusaro. The huts and Nativity scenes are integrated into the luminous installations of the Luci d'Artista, creating a truly striking visual experience. Other nativity scenes animate the ancient village of Centocamerelle and the hamlet of Cappella, where performers bring the scenes to life among the alleys and the Giardini di Dedalo.
Along the set paths, the people of Bacoli—grandparents, parents, and children alike—don traditional costumes to reconstruct ancient trades: the baker, the blacksmith, the spinner, the shepherd. Each scene tells a fragment of popular life, accompanied by Christmas music and the scents of local products. It is a wonderful opportunity to breathe in the Christmas spirit and rediscover the value of community.
The living nativity has deep roots in the popular devotion of the Phlegraean territory. Bacoli's parishes, such as those of Sant'Antimo and Filomena, have coordinated these performances for years, involving numerous volunteers. Admission is generally free, and the event is part of the Municipality's rich Christmas calendar, which includes sacred music concerts, markets, and shows for children.
Overlooking the Gulf of Pozzuoli in Campania, Bacoli is a city steeped in history, where the living nativity intertwines with a unique archaeological heritage: the Cento Camerelle, the Piscine Mirabili, and the remains of the ancient Roman Bauli. Visiting the nativity scenes during the holidays is a chance to discover an authentic corner of the Phlegraean Fields, far from the most crowded tourist circuits.
The dates for the next edition of the Bacoli living nativity have not yet been made official. The tradition, historically animated by the parishes and associations of the Phlegraean town, usually takes place between late December and Epiphany in the villages of Centocamerelle, Cappella, and at the Casina Vanvitelliana. For updates, we recommend following the official channels of the Municipality of Bacoli.
Bacoli can be reached by car from the Naples Tangenziale (Pozzuoli-Arco Felice exit) by continuing along the Phlegraean coast. By train, the Cumana and Circumflegrea lines connect Naples to Torregaveta, where buses depart for the area. The Casina Vanvitelliana is located on Lake Fusaro.
Admission to the living nativity scenes is generally free. Performances are held in the late afternoon and evening, typically from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Precise dates and times are published annually by the Municipality of Bacoli and the organizing associations.
Wear comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for walking through the villages. We recommend combining your visit with the Luci d'Artista light displays at the Bourbon Park.
