European music arrives in Menfi as part of the Conservatorio Toscanini's Harmonie project
In the town of Menfi, overlooking the sea in the province of Agrigento, the Music Festival takes on a truly unique form. This is where the European project Harmonie – Artistic Hub for the Musical Network and Opportunities for New Generations in Europe kicks off, a winner of the COMM/IT/GRANT 2025 call promoted by the European Commission's Representation in Italy and funded by the European Union. The event is conceived and organized by the Arturo Toscanini Conservatory of Music in Ribera, under the artistic direction of Prof. Mariangela Longo.
The heart of the Menfi stop is the preview «The Sounds of the Sea's Wood», a performance designed to be heard aboard a fishing boat. The star is the Cello Ensemble of the Toscanini Conservatory, conducted by Maestro Luciano Tarantino. The instruments resonating over the water have a moving history: they are built from the wood of migrant boats—wrecks corroded by salt and silent witnesses to desperate crossings—transformed into cellos that restore voice and dignity to those who have crossed the Mediterranean. It is a manifesto-concert that weaves together music, memory, and hospitality in the Sicilian coastal landscape.
The Menfi preview is the first in a network of events spanning Europe from June to October, reaching Sciacca, Palermo, Rome, and Prague. The common thread is the theme «The Voice of Places»: the enhancement of traditional music and cultural heritage, reinterpreted through new languages such as jazz, pop-rock, and contemporary music. Over 100 musicians from Italian and European conservatories bring the entire project to life, aiming to create an international network between conservatories, festivals, and cultural institutions while supporting young talent across the continent.
Menfi, already known for its wine and Blue Flag beaches, confirms itself as a place of culture, capable of giving local heritage a European dimension through the universal language of music.
On June 15, 2026, Menfi hosts the preview of the Harmonie project by the Arturo Toscanini Conservatory of Ribera, winner of the European call COMM/IT/GRANT 2025. The event features the performance «The Sounds of the Sea's Wood», executed aboard a fishing boat by the Conservatory's Cello Ensemble, conducted by Maestro Luciano Tarantino.
The instruments used are crafted from the wood of migrant boats: a musical tribute to the memory of the Mediterranean. The initiative is realized in collaboration with the Italian Association for the Promotion of Music Festivals, the Empedocle Music High School, and middle schools with musical curricula in the province of Agrigento. The Menfi preview opens the European schedule which, from June to October, also touches Sciacca, Palermo, Rome, and Prague.
The Menfi preview inaugurates the Harmonie project, which then continues with evenings in Sciacca (June 20 and 21, lower atrium of the Town Hall, 9:00 PM, free entry) and stops in Palermo, Rome, and Prague until October 2026. The full program of the project was presented on June 18 at the Press Room of the Sicilian Regional Assembly.
The event takes place at the port of Menfi (province of Agrigento), aboard a fishing boat.
By car: Menfi can be reached via the SS115 along the Agrigento coast; the tourist port (Porto Palo / Lido Fiori) is the reference point for the coastal area. By train: the nearest stations are Sciacca or Castelvetrano, with onward travel by bus or car. By plane: Palermo or Trapani-Birgi airports, both about 1.5–2 hours away.
Events within the Toscanini Conservatory's Harmonie project are free; for the preview aboard the fishing boat, it is recommended to check procedures and seat availability with the organizers.
