One of Tuscany's oldest carnivals, in the heart of Borgo San Lorenzo
The Mugello Carnival is one of the oldest and most iconic carnival celebrations in Tuscany. With its 313th edition in 2026, it boasts a rare continuity rooted in centuries of popular tradition. The beating heart of the festival is Piazza Dante, in the historic center of Borgo San Lorenzo, the main town of the Mugello area near Florence, where large floats handcrafted by the Committee's artisans parade every year.
The program spans several Sundays with a well-established format: food stalls open in the morning, followed by the parade of floats along the traditional town route. In the afternoon, the squares and streets come alive with masked processions, accompanied by music, performances, entertainment, and plenty of confetti. There are also plenty of family-friendly activities, including face painting and events designed for children, making the festival suitable for all ages.
The major innovation of recent editions is "La Freccia del Mugello" (The Mugello Arrow), an allegorical train on wheels designed to be fully accessible and inclusive. Equipped with ramps, easy access, protected spaces, and safety systems, it allows people with physical, sensory, and cognitive disabilities to experience the parade as protagonists. It is one of the first experiences of its kind in Italy, supported by local partners, and perfectly reflects the spirit of a festival that prioritizes community participation.
The Mugello Carnival is more than just a parade: it is a grand moment of collective celebration for Borgo San Lorenzo and the entire Mugello region, organized by the volunteers of the Carnival Committee. Local districts, such as Sagginale, often propose parallel initiatives with processions and school activities. The event traditionally concludes on Ash Wednesday with the Polentata delle Ceneri in Piazza Garibaldi, a convivial ritual marking the arrival of Lent.
Admission to all days is free. Along the route, you will find food stands and refreshment points where you can taste local specialties, carnival sweets, and typical Mugello products. It is the perfect formula for a family day out filled with color, joy, and genuine Tuscan hospitality.
The 313th edition of the Mugello Carnival opened on Sunday, January 25, 2026, and animated the center of Borgo San Lorenzo for five days, until Shrove Tuesday on February 17, with the closing on February 18.
The hallmark of this edition was "La Freccia del Mugello", an accessible and inclusive allegorical train designed to allow people with disabilities to experience the parade as protagonists, supported by Itas Assicurazioni. A choice that confirmed the social vocation of the event, organized by the volunteers of the Carnival Committee.
The great 2026 novelty: "La Freccia del Mugello", an inclusive allegorical train equipped with ramps, easy access, and protected spaces for people with physical, sensory, and cognitive disabilities.
Borgo San Lorenzo can be reached by car from Florence via the SP551 or the Strada Statale 302 Faentina (approx. 30 km). By train, the Borgo San Lorenzo station is served by the Faentina line (FlorenceโFaenza) and the line to Florence via Pontassieve.
The parades and masked processions wind through Piazza Dante and the streets of the historic center. The Polentata delle Ceneri is held in Piazza Garibaldi.
Admission is free. Parades generally start at 11:00โ11:30 AM; it is recommended to arrive early to find parking and a spot along the route. Food stands and refreshment points are available on-site.
