Politics, music, and cuisine in the Montececeri Green Area
After the significantly downsized 2025 edition, the Festa de L'Unità of Fiesole is reclaiming its historic format and returning to the Montececeri Green Area in the municipality of Fiesole, in the province of Florence. It is one of the longest-running popular festivals in the Florentine area, with a tradition spanning over seventy years; for decades, it has served as a primary summer gathering point for the Fiesole community, attracting thousands of people from the hills north of Florence.
As per tradition, the festival weaves together three core elements. The first is political, with evenings dedicated to debates on current affairs: foreign policy, economics, and taxation are among the topics announced for this edition, featuring speakers from the Democratic Party. The second element is entertainment, featuring live music, dancing, theatrical performances, and initiatives designed for families and children. The third, equally important, is conviviality at the table: the festival restaurant, along with the bar and pizzeria, is run entirely by volunteers and remains one of the historic reasons for the event's success.
The 2026 edition marks a return to normalcy after a difficult period. In 2025, the festival was held in a minimal format over just two weekends at a different location due to organizational instability and a shortage of volunteers. With the renewal of local party leadership, the organization has successfully restored the full format: approximately 15,000 participants are expected for this edition, with around fifty volunteers mobilized. The duration has been slightly shortened compared to the past to avoid overlapping with the celebrations for the patron saint, San Romolo, in early July.
A highlight is scheduled for July 23rd and 24th, when the Montececeri Green Area will host the Provincial Festival of the Democratic Party, with a program also dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the first women's vote in Italy. Announced guests for the debate evenings include MP Arturo Scotto and Senator Cristina Tajani, while national secretary Elly Schlein is also expected for at least a brief visit.
More than just a political event, the Festa de L'Unità has always been a defining part of Fiesole's identity and its surrounding hamlets: a place to gather on summer evenings, dine outdoors, listen to music, and participate in public debate. Its return to full capacity in 2026, within the evocative green setting of Montececeri, is seen by the community as a sign of continuity with a history spanning over seventy years.
The 2026 edition brings the Festa de L'Unità of Fiesole back to its traditional scale at the Montececeri Green Area, from July 10th to 27th. Following the minimal 2025 edition, the Fiesole Democratic Party organization has restored the full format, with about fifty volunteers mobilized and an expected turnout of approximately 15,000 participants over the two and a half weeks of the festival.
As usual, the event weaves together evening political debates, music, dancing, theater, family activities, and the food and wine offerings of the restaurant, bar, and pizzeria. The duration has been slightly shortened to avoid overlapping with the celebrations for the patron saint, San Romolo.
At the time of the event announcement, the detailed program had not yet been finalized; the organization typically releases it in the weeks leading up to the festival. However, some key political events have already been confirmed.
The complete musical and cultural program, including dates and times, will be announced by the organizers closer to the event.
