About Palio of San Lorenzo

Every August, Borgo San Lorenzo, the main town of the Mugello region, comes alive for its Palio in honor of its patron saint, San Lorenzo. The town's districts and surrounding hamlets compete at the Foro Boario in five tests of strength and skill: tug-of-war, rulla throwing, cart racing, and hay bale racing. It is a week of popular festivities that culminates on August 10th with the final, square dinners, fireworks, and music, blending tradition, local identity, and community spirit.

The Palio of Borgo San Lorenzo, a symbol of the Mugello summer

In the heart of the Mugello, about thirty kilometers from Florence, Borgo San Lorenzo celebrates its most cherished event every year: the Palio of San Lorenzo, a grand challenge between the local districts that concludes the festivities in honor of the patron saint. For a few days in early August, the entire municipality divides itself by the colors of its neighborhoods and hamlets, giving life to a popular competition that is much more than a simple race: it is a matter of belonging, pride, and local identity.

The competing districts

The Palio pits the districts of the municipal territory against one another, each with its own color: the greens of Sagginale-Rabatta, the yellows of Santa Lucia, the reds of Stazione, and the pinks of Ronta-Panicaglia, alongside other historic neighborhoods like Villa Pecori, Olmi-Salaiole, Zeti-Crocifisso, and Faltona. Each district fields its own athletes and arrives at the challenge with flags, chants, and a fan base that fills the stands of the Foro Boario, the beating heart of the event.

Tests of strength and skill

The title is awarded based on five traditional events that combine physical strength, coordination, and teamwork. Among the most anticipated challenges are the tug-of-war, rulla throwing, cart racing, and the spectacular hay bale race. The semifinals are held in the days leading up to the final, progressively narrowing down the competing districts, while the overall ranking is decided by points: in 2025, the pinks of Ronta-Panicaglia triumphed with 40 points.

A community celebration in honor of the patron saint

The Palio is part of the festivities for the patron saint San Lorenzo, organized by the APS Palio Borgo San Lorenzo in collaboration with the Municipality, the Pro Loco, and the parish. On August 10th, the saint's feast day, the morning begins with a Solemn Mass in the Pieve and the presentation of the Stelle di San Lorenzo, awards for individuals and associations that have distinguished themselves in the area. The day continues with the Palio final in the afternoon and concludes with evening celebrations, including dinners in the squares, concerts, fireworks, and music until late at night.

Tradition and surrounding events

During the days of the Palio, there is no shortage of side events that enliven the center of Borgo San Lorenzo: the briscola tournament in the square, the San Lorenzo tombola, and musical evenings transform the Mugello capital into a great gathering point for residents and visitors alike. For those looking to discover the most authentic soul of Tuscany, away from the major tourist circuits, the Palio of Borgo San Lorenzo is the ideal opportunity to experience a genuine village festival, made of friendly sporting rivalries, good food, and Mugello warmth.
