Celebrating the Mozzarella di Gioia del Colle PDO with master cheesemakers, tastings, and live entertainment
Nestled in the fertile basin between the Bari Murgia and the Itria Valley, Gioia del Colle has long been one of Italy's capitals of mozzarella. Every summer, this town in the province of Bari dedicates two days to its dairy treasure with the Mozzarella Festival (also promoted under the Gioia Festival brand), an event that blends gastronomy, rural tradition, and lively Apulian entertainment.
The undisputed star is the Mozzarella di Gioia del Colle PDO, a prestigious designation that protects a traditional pasta filata (stretched-curd) process. Known for its slightly tangy flavor, it is deeply rooted in the richness of the Murgia plateau's pastures. During the festival, visitors can watch master cheesemakers at work as they stretch and hand-shape the curd into fresh mozzarella, nodini, and scamorzaโa ritual passed down through generations in the local masserie (farmhouses).
The heart of the event lies in the tastings: fresh, warm mozzarella, artisanal dairy products, and perfect pairings with typical Apulian specialties. The tasting counters are complemented by stands from local dairies, offering a unique opportunity to meet the producers directly and discover the secrets of a supply chain that stretches from the Murgia pastures to tables across Italy. The festival also hosts seminars dedicated to the future of the dairy industry, focusing on innovation and sustainability.
The evenings bring Piazza Umberto I and Piazza Luca D'Andrano to life with concerts, comedy shows, and themed events that draw large crowds from across the province of Bari and beyond. This winning formula combines the promotion of local food heritage with summer entertainment, filling the historic center with families, food enthusiasts, and curious visitors.
The Mozzarella Festival is a highlight of Gioia del Colle's rich summer program, confirming the town's status as a premier destination for food and wine tourism. Admission is free, making this a popular, accessible event that celebrates the finest dairy excellence of Southern Italy.
The Mozzarella Festival returns to Gioia del Colle (BA) on August 21-22, 2026, as part of the 'Joha AeStas' municipal summer program. For this edition, the squares of the Murgia town will once again host live cheese-stretching demonstrations by master cheesemakers, tastings of Mozzarella di Gioia del Colle PDO, and stalls from local dairies.
Admission is free. As per tradition, the daytime activities dedicated to the product will be accompanied by musical performances and evening entertainment.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including artist names, schedules, and tasting details, will be announced by the organizers (Municipality of Gioia del Colle and the Milkyway association) in the weeks leading up to the event.
Based on recent editions, the two days typically alternate between: live cheese-stretching demonstrations in Piazza Luca D'Andrano, tastings of Mozzarella di Gioia del Colle PDO and local dairy products, a seminar on the dairy supply chain, and evening music and shows in Piazza Umberto I.
