About Barbera Trail

The Barbera Trail is a trail running event held in Mongardino, a small town in the Province of Asti nestled in the Monferrato hills. Born from the passion of three friends for running and the outdoors, the event offers courses of varying lengths through chestnut woods, hazelnut groves, and Barbera vineyards, treating participants to 360-degree views of the rolling Piedmontese hills. An autumn event that blends sport, landscape, and the local food and wine tradition.

A trail through the Barbera hills

The Barbera Trail is one of the most picturesque trail running events on the Asti racing calendar. It takes place in Mongardino, a small town in the Province of Asti, in the heart of the Monferrato hills, in Piedmont. The event was born from the idea of three friends passionate about running and nature, supported by Atletica Asti 2.2, the Municipality of Mongardino, numerous sponsors, and a team of local volunteers.

The courses

The competitive program features three distances designed to satisfy both experienced runners and those approaching trail running for the first time:

  • Vivace: 10 km with approximately 450 meters of elevation gain, ideal for those looking for a first taste of trail running;
  • Classic: 16 km with approximately 600 meters of elevation gain, the event's signature course;
  • Superiore: 25 km with approximately 1000 meters of elevation gain, reserved for the most trained athletes.

Alongside the competitive races, there are events dedicated to younger runners (Esordienti and Ragazzi categories on shorter distances) and a non-competitive walk of about 7 km through the vineyards, with on-site registration, perfect for families and walking enthusiasts.

A loop through paths and vineyards

The track is almost entirely unpaved: very little asphalt, plenty of trails, gravel roads, and single tracks that wind through woods, meadows, and rows of Barbera vines. The longest course offers panoramic views of the Asti hills and passes near the charming Castello di Belangero, one of the most characteristic points in the final part of the loop. Technical sections, particularly some descents, make the run stimulating for experienced trail runners.

Sport, nature, and tradition

More than just a race, the Barbera Trail is a local celebration: well-stocked refreshment stations along the route, a generous race pack, prizes for various categories, and social moments at the finish line, where a glass of Barbera—the signature wine of these hills—is a must. The event showcases the Asti landscape, characterized by chestnut forests, hazelnut groves, and vineyards, helping to introduce Mongardino and the food and wine culture of the Province of Asti to runners and visitors from all over Piedmont and beyond.

Barbera Trail — edition 2026

The event offers three competitive courses through the Asti hills, in addition to youth races and a non-competitive walk through the vineyards. The event is included in the official 2026 FIDAL Asti calendar as the final stage of the provincial short trail circuit.
