Running through the trails and vineyards of the Asti hills in Mongardino
The Barbera Trail is one of the most picturesque trail running events on the Asti racing calendar. It takes place in Mongardino, a small town in the Province of Asti, in the heart of the Monferrato hills, in Piedmont. The event was born from the idea of three friends passionate about running and nature, supported by Atletica Asti 2.2, the Municipality of Mongardino, numerous sponsors, and a team of local volunteers.
The competitive program features three distances designed to satisfy both experienced runners and those approaching trail running for the first time:
Alongside the competitive races, there are events dedicated to younger runners (Esordienti and Ragazzi categories on shorter distances) and a non-competitive walk of about 7 km through the vineyards, with on-site registration, perfect for families and walking enthusiasts.
The track is almost entirely unpaved: very little asphalt, plenty of trails, gravel roads, and single tracks that wind through woods, meadows, and rows of Barbera vines. The longest course offers panoramic views of the Asti hills and passes near the charming Castello di Belangero, one of the most characteristic points in the final part of the loop. Technical sections, particularly some descents, make the run stimulating for experienced trail runners.
More than just a race, the Barbera Trail is a local celebration: well-stocked refreshment stations along the route, a generous race pack, prizes for various categories, and social moments at the finish line, where a glass of Barbera—the signature wine of these hills—is a must. The event showcases the Asti landscape, characterized by chestnut forests, hazelnut groves, and vineyards, helping to introduce Mongardino and the food and wine culture of the Province of Asti to runners and visitors from all over Piedmont and beyond.
The 4th Barbera Trail will take place on Saturday, October 3, 2026, in Mongardino. This edition confirms the three competitive distances that have characterized the event, with the meeting point at Largo Municipio.
The planned courses are:
The program is completed by youth races and the non-competitive walk through the vineyards. The race is included in the official FIDAL calendar of the Province of Asti.
2026 Program: competitive races on the Vivace (10 km), Classic (16 km), and Superiore (25 km) courses, youth races (Esordienti and Ragazzi categories), and a non-competitive walk of about 7 km through the vineyards with on-site registration. Start times and program details will be communicated by the organizers on official channels.
Mongardino is located just a few kilometers from Asti, easily accessible by car from the A21 Turin-Piacenza motorway (Asti Est or Asti Ovest exit). The reference railway station is Asti, served by regional trains from Turin and Alessandria; from there, continue by car towards the town.
The meeting point and start lines are in Largo Municipio 1, in the center of Mongardino.
Registration is done online via the WedoSport platform. The non-competitive walk requires on-site registration. For updated fees and schedule details, please check the official website and the event's social media channels.
