The craziest and most original wedding in the Sicilian Carnival
Every year, during the Carnival season, the small town of Montelepre, in the province of Palermo, comes alive for one of Sicily's most curious and beloved traditions: "U Matrimoniu". It is a goliardic parody of a wedding, a grotesque bridal parade that involves the entire community in a grand collective celebration. Unlikely spouses, nagging relatives, mothers-in-law, and a vast crowd of masked guests parade through the town streets accompanied by music and dancing, amidst confetti and streamers.
The Montelepre bridal parade began in the 1980s as an attempt to give an organized structure to the town's carnival festivities. After a hiatus, the tradition was revived in 2008 thanks to the efforts of volunteers from the ATMA association and the collaboration between the municipal administration, the Pro Loco Montelepre, and other local associations. Since then, "U Matrimoniu" has become an unmissable event, capable of attracting visitors to Montelepre from across the entire Palermo area.
The heart of the event is the parade of the "bride and groom" and their guests, which winds through the streets of the historic center to the town squares. The highlight day is dedicated to the wedding procession: after the traditional "I do," the dancing begins, and the entire community spills into the square, transforming it into a massive open-air dance hall with crowds of often improvised costumes, music, and revelry. The festival closes with the wedding banquet, rich in local products.
Beyond the main parade, the Montelepre Carnival offers a program that also involves the little ones, with entertainment games, serenades by the marching band under the future "bride's" balcony, and the "Children's Carnival," a singing competition dedicated to the town's children and teenagers. It is a deeply felt festival where the boundary between spectators and actors dissolves: in Montelepre, during Carnival, everyone is invited to the wedding.
Montelepre is a town in the hinterland of the Metropolitan City of Palermo, in Sicily, nestled among the mountains that overlook the Gulf of Castellammare. Also known for its 20th-century history, the town offers visitors authentic glimpses and a warm welcome: the Carnival with "U Matrimoniu" is the ideal opportunity to discover the popular identity and festive spirit of this Sicilian community.
The 2026 Montelepre Carnival celebrated its traditional "U Matrimoniu" bridal parade on Saturday, February 21, 2026, from 6:00 PM, in Piazza Principe di Piemonte. The event, originally scheduled for Sunday, February 15, was postponed due to a weather alert.
The evening featured a parade, the celebration of the "wedding," and dancing, with musical entertainment by DJ Giacomo Maniaci and Peppe ed Enzo Vox. The festival was organized by the ATMA association, the Pro Loco Montelepre, and the Municipality of Montelepre, with the involvement of local associations. As per tradition, the "bride and groom" warmly welcomed guests for a grand square party.
Montelepre is located in the hinterland of the Metropolitan City of Palermo. By car from Palermo, take the A29 motorway (Giardinello/Montelepre exit) in about 30-40 minutes. The nearest airport is the Falcone-Borsellino Airport in Palermo (Punta Raisi).
The "U Matrimoniu" parade takes place during the Carnival period (February/March), generally in the late afternoon, in Piazza Principe di Piemonte and the streets of the center. Times may vary and the event may be rescheduled in case of bad weather.
Participation in the town square festival is free and open to everyone. For the updated program, it is recommended to check the channels of the Pro Loco Montelepre and the Municipality of Montelepre (tel. +39 091 8940111).
