The flower festival that turns Monreale's historic center into a carpet of petals
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Monreale Arte in Fiore is the flower festival of the town in the Province of Palermo, world-famous for its Norman Cathedral and Byzantine mosaics, a UNESCO World Heritage site. For an entire weekend, Corso Pietro Novelli, the main artery of the historic center, and the monumental squares turn into a vast open-air workshop where teams create a floral carpet dozens of meters long. The result is an ephemeral work of art, designed to last for the duration of the festival and live on in the memories of those who walk past it.
The first edition was held in June 2018, coinciding with the Corpus Domini solemnity: the flower festival accompanied the traditional Sunday procession through the city streets, following a long-standing tradition linking floral carpets to popular devotion. Over the years, the event has grown, moving to September and expanding to become the centerpiece of a calendar of events that brings Monreale to life at the end of summer.
The floral route runs mainly along Corso Pietro Novelli, while floral galleries and arrangements are set up in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, Piazza Guglielmo II (in front of the Cathedral), and Piazzetta Vaglica. The images created with petals are inspired by the theme of Sicily and Sicilian culture, using a technique similar to mosaic work that pays homage to the Cathedral's famous art.
Monreale Arte in Fiore is a collaborative event: alongside master florists, art high schools, local schools, associations, and volunteers work together in a festive atmosphere that involves the entire community. The event, promoted by the Monreale Merchants Association with the support of the Municipality and the Archdiocese, is accompanied by side initiatives: fashion shows, concerts in Piazza Guglielmo II, exhibitions, performances, and food and wine events featuring traditional Sicilian flavors.
An ideal destination for those visiting the Province of Palermo who wish to combine the discovery of Norman-Byzantine heritage with the charm of one of the island's most evocative flower festivals.
The dates for the 2026 edition of Monreale Arte in Fiore have not yet been announced. Based on previous editions, the event is expected to return in September, featuring the traditional petal carpet along Corso Pietro Novelli and floral arrangements in the squares of the historic center. The program, schedule, and side events will be released by the organizers closer to the event.
Monreale is about 10 km from Palermo. By car, take the SS186; there is ample parking near the center. By bus, there are frequent AMAT/AST connections from Palermo. The nearest airport is Palermo Falcone-Borsellino (Punta Raisi).
The flower festival takes place in the historic center of Monreale, along Corso Pietro Novelli and in the squares of Vittorio Emanuele II, Guglielmo II, and Vaglica. It is traditionally held during a weekend in September.
The event is free and takes place outdoors. We recommend also visiting the Monreale Cathedral and its cloister.
