About Monte Sant'Angelo Longobarda

Every year in late June, the town of Monte Sant'Angelo, in the heart of the Gargano, celebrates the inclusion of the Lombard sites of the Sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Through conferences, free guided tours, the White Night of cultural heritage, concerts, and spiritual moments, "Monte Sant'Angelo Longobarda" weaves together medieval history, Michaelic faith, and Gargano identity in one of Europe's oldest pilgrimage destinations.

One town, two UNESCO sites

Monte Sant'Angelo, in the Province of Foggia, is the only municipality in Puglia to house two UNESCO World Heritage sites: the Lombard sites of the Sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo, inscribed on June 25, 2011, as part of the serial site "The Lombards in Italy. Places of Power (568-774 AD)", and the ancient beech forests of the Foresta Umbra, recognized on July 7, 2017. At the end of June, the town celebrates the first of these recognitions with the "Monte Sant'Angelo Longobarda" festival.

The Sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo

A pilgrimage destination since the 5th century, the Sacred Grotto of Archangel Michael is one of the oldest and most venerated sanctuaries in the West and a key stop on the Via Sacra Langobardorum. It was the Lombards who chose Saint Michael as the protector of their people, leaving inscriptions and testimonies in the Sanctuary that today earn the Gargano monument its international recognition. The annual celebration commemorates this deep bond between the community of Monte Sant'Angelo, its early medieval history, and Michaelic spirituality.

Michael et Franciscus

In 2026, marking the 15th anniversary of the recognition and the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi, the event took the title "Michael et Franciscus", uniting the figure of the Archangel with that of the "Poverello" of Assisi, who was also a pilgrim in the Gargano. The program combined scientific conferences, the inauguration of restored heritage sites, liturgical moments, the renewal of the friendship pact with the city of Assisi, and the welcoming of the Relic of the Mantle of Saint Francis.

A living heritage

The celebrations are not just about memory: they involve the Diocese of Manfredonia-Vieste-San Giovanni Rotondo, the Puglia Region, the Centre for Michaelic and Gargano Studies of the University of Bari, the Italia Langobardorum Association, and the entire citizenry. With free tours of the TECUM museums, the Castle, the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Tumba, and the historic center, "Monte Sant'Angelo Longobarda" invites residents and visitors to rediscover the universal value of a place that, for over 1,500 years, has united Europe under the sign of Saint Michael.

Monte Sant'Angelo Longobarda — edition 2026

The 2026 edition, titled "Michael et Franciscus", celebrated the 15th anniversary of the UNESCO recognition of the Lombard sites and the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi. Six days of conferences, inaugurations, liturgies, the White Night of heritage, concerts, and the welcoming of the Relic of the Mantle of Saint Francis at the Sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo.

Michael et Franciscus 2026

From June 25 to 30, 2026, Monte Sant'Angelo celebrated fifteen years since the first UNESCO recognition, associating Archangel Michael with Saint Francis of Assisi in the year of the 800th anniversary of his death. The event combined scientific rigor, spirituality, and popular culture, with the participation of the Puglia Region, the Archdiocese of Manfredonia-Vieste-San Giovanni Rotondo, and the Italia Langobardorum Association.

Highlights

The opening on June 25 featured the regional conference of the CAMPUS project on climate change adaptation plans for UNESCO sites and the inauguration of the restored church of Sant'Antonio Abate. In the evening, at the upper atrium of the Sanctuary, a special event marked the 15th UNESCO anniversary with a string quartet from the Orchestra Suoni del Sud and video links with other Lombard sites in Cividale del Friuli, Brescia, Spoleto, and Benevento. On June 26, in the Grotto of the Archangel, a solemn Eucharist was presided over by Monsignor Felice Accrocca, Bishop of Assisi, followed by the renewal of the friendship pact between Monte Sant'Angelo and Assisi. On June 27, the White Night of cultural heritage offered free tours and a concert by Paolo Jannacci in Piazza Carlo d'Angiò, while June 28 saw the welcoming of the Relic of the Mantle of Saint Francis.
