Four days of masks, allegorical floats, and music in the heart of Montallegro
In the heart of the Agrigento province, the Montallegro Carnival is one of the most cherished annual events for this small town overlooking the southern coast of Sicily. For four days, the town's streets and main squares transform into an open-air stage filled with confetti, flamboyant costumes, music, and dance. It is a deeply popular and participatory festival that involves the entire community, from children to adults, in an atmosphere of shared joy.
The true star of the Montallegro Carnival is the allegorical float, built by hand over several months by local volunteers, associations, and residents. Each year, the float features a different theme and travels through the town center, carrying the enthusiasm of the crowd with it. Surrounding it are the costumed groups, troupes of performers who bring the parades to life with choreography, dances, and meticulously crafted disguises.
The program alternates between daytime and evening parades, with groups performing on the stage set up in Piazza Giovanni Paolo II, the hub of the town's festivities. The soundtrack of the event is provided by local DJs, who accompany the processions and turn the squares into open-air dance floors. The grand finale is dedicated to the performances of the costumed groups and the awards ceremony for the most original masks, the highlight that brings the celebrations to a close.
The Carnival is one of many traditions that mark the year in Montallegro, alongside the Feast of Saint Joseph, the Corpus Domini Flower Festival that covers Piazza Giovanni Paolo II in blooms, the feast of the patron saint Saint Leonard, and the living nativity scene at Christmas. Supported by the Municipality and brought to life by local clubs and associations, the Carnival represents a moment of strong cohesion for this small community in the Sicilian province of Agrigento.
The 2026 Montallegro Carnival brought the town to life from February 20 to 23 with a rich program of parades and shows.
Friday, February 20, at 7:00 PM, the first parade of the allegorical float kicked off, starting from the "Da Calogero" pizzeria and arriving at Piazzale Agip, accompanied by a DJ set from five local DJs.
Saturday, February 21, at 7:00 PM, the three costumed groups were presented on the stage in Piazza Giovanni Paolo II, followed by the resumption of the parade through the town streets.
Sunday, February 22, the float's route was reversed, starting from Piazzale Agip and arriving at the "Da Calogero" pizzeria.
Monday, February 23, featured the grand finale, with performances by the costumed groups and the awards ceremony for the most original masks.
