Lights, music, and folk traditions in the village of Cianciana
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Sicily Luminarie Festival is an artistic and cultural event that every summer transforms Cianciana, a small village in the Platani Valley in the province of Agrigento, into an authentic spectacle of light. The historic center is adorned with hundreds of illuminated structures and over 100,000 light bulbs that bring to life arches, vaults, and monumental scenery, reviving the great Baroque tradition of Southern Italian luminarie.
The festival was created to promote the artistic luminarie of Southern Italy, which are candidates for UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status. These impressive ephemeral architectures, built with thousands of lamps mounted on wooden frames, represent ancient knowledge passed down from generation to generation. The event creates a cultural bridge between Sicily and Puglia, particularly with the town of Scorrano, considered the world capital of luminarie, whose craftsmen participate in the festival's meetings and conferences.
The program features evening and itinerant events that bring the town's squares and streets to life. Highlights include:
Designed as a free, open-air event, the festival attracts thousands of visitors to the village, contributing to the tourism promotion of the Platani Valley and the Agrigento hinterland. The installations remain lit for several evenings, offering an immersive experience that combines art, music, popular spirituality, and tastings of typical Sicilian products. The event is organized by the Tradizionando Cultural Association, in collaboration with the Maria SS. Libera Inferni Committee and under the patronage of the Ministry of Tourism.
Located in the municipality of Cianciana, in the heart of Sicily and a short distance from the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, the event is also an opportunity to discover an inland village rich in history, traditions, and hospitality, which has become a destination for growing international tourism in recent years.
The 2026 edition of the Sicily Luminarie Festival in Cianciana has not yet been confirmed with official dates and a program. In previous years, the event took place in the second half of August, coinciding with the Ferragosto period, enlivening the village's historic center with light installations, musical parades, and night shows. Information on dates, the program, and participants will be updated as soon as they are announced by the organizers.
Cianciana is located in the Agrigento hinterland, in the Platani Valley. By car, it can be reached via the SS189 and the provincial roads connecting Agrigento, Ribera, and Bivona. The nearest airport is Palermo (Punta Raisi), about a two-hour drive away.
The event is outdoors and free of charge. The shows are concentrated in the historic center and the town squares, with evening and night performances.
We recommend arriving in the village in the late afternoon to enjoy the lighting of the luminarie at dusk and booking your accommodation in advance, given the high turnout during the Ferragosto period.
