The highlight of the Joppolo summer, dedicated to the yellow melon of the Valley of the Temples
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Yellow Melon Festival is the most anticipated event of the summer in Joppolo Giancaxio, a village of a few thousand inhabitants in the province of Agrigento, in the heart of Sicily overlooking the Valley of the Temples. For over twenty years, the event has transformed Corso Umberto I into a large open-air exhibition space, where the absolute star is the yellow melon grown by local farms.
The yellow melon of Joppolo belongs to the Cucumis melo inodorus variety, prized for its long shelf life and the juicy sweetness of its flesh. The festival was created specifically to promote this typical crop, which supports the economy of numerous local, mostly family-run, agricultural businesses. During the festival, the melon is enjoyed in all its forms, from sweet to savory, thanks to the creativity of chefs and producers who reinterpret the fruit each year in dishes, desserts, and specialties.
Along the town's main street, food and craft stalls are set up, offering guided tastings and samples based on melon. The evenings are enlivened by folk dances, musical groups, and entertainment shows that recall Sicilian popular tradition. There is also space dedicated to peasant culture, such as the exhibition of Sicilian carts that has accompanied recent editions.
Organized by the Municipal Administration together with the Pro Loco, the Yellow Melon Festival is much more than a gastronomic event: it is a moment of identity and gathering for Joppolo Giancaxio and for the many visitors arriving from the province of Agrigento. Admission is free, and the atmosphere is that of an authentic Sicilian village festival, filled with conviviality, music, and local flavors.
The Joppolo summer traditionally opens in June with the "Mangia e passia" event and culminates in August with the Yellow Melon Festival, considered by the Municipal Administration to be the town's signature festival.
The 2026 Yellow Melon Festival will return to Joppolo Giancaxio (AG) to celebrate the territory's signature product. The Municipal Administration, led by Mayor Domenico Migliara, has confirmed that the festival remains the "unmissable summer celebration" of Joppolo, as part of a summer calendar that opens in June with the "Mangia e passia" event.
The official dates and the detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been published. As per tradition, the festival will take place on the evenings of August along Corso Umberto I, with an exhibition area, food and craft stalls, yellow melon tastings ranging from sweet to savory, live music, and folk performances. It is recommended to consult the official channels of the Municipality and the Pro Loco for updates.
The festival takes place along Corso Umberto I, in the center of Joppolo Giancaxio (AG), in Sicily.
By car: Joppolo Giancaxio is about 15 km from Agrigento, accessible via the SS189 and the provincial roads of the Valley of the Temples. The nearest airports are Palermo (about 130 km) or Catania (about 160 km). The reference railway station is Agrigento Centrale, connected to the village by provincial roads.
Admission to the event is free. Tastings and purchases at the stalls are paid.
The festival is traditionally held in the first evenings of August. It is recommended to check the updated dates and program on the official channels of the Municipality and the Pro Loco of Joppolo Giancaxio.
