Allegorical float parades and carnival festivities in the Norman city
The Monreale Carnival is one of the most colorful and well-attended winter events in the Palermo area. Organized by the Municipal Administration of Monreale, the festival transforms the historic center of this famous Norman city—renowned worldwide for its Cathedral and mosaics—into a grand open-air stage filled with confetti, masks, music, and joy for several days.
The heart of the celebration is the grand parade of papier-mâché allegorical floats, featuring exquisite craftsmanship, accompanied by masked groups and musical entertainment. The procession starts at Piazza Inghilleri and winds through the streets of the center to Piazza Guglielmo, the monumental heart of Monreale, where the largest crowds gather. Thousands of people, including children, parents, and visitors, pack the route, confirming the Carnival as one of the community's most awaited events.
The Monreale Carnival is not limited to the historic center: the program extends to the hamlets of San Martino, Villaciambra, Aquino, Pioppo, and Grisì, with the goal of ensuring widespread festivities throughout the municipal territory. The floats created by the youth of the Pioppo hamlet, who star in the grand finale in Piazza Guglielmo, are particularly appreciated.
Designed especially for children and families, the program includes entertainment in schools, workshops, shows, dance performances, and festive moments in the main squares. The celebration involves schools, local associations, and volunteers, with the support of law enforcement, the Carabinieri, and civil protection to ensure the event's safety.
The event is held in the Municipality of Monreale, in the province of Palermo, Sicily, spanning the historic center (Piazza Inghilleri, Piazza Guglielmo) and the hamlets of the municipal territory.
The 2026 edition of the Monreale Carnival unfolded from February 9 to 17 (Shrove Tuesday), featuring entertainment in the schools of the Margherita di Navarra Comprehensive Institute, workshops, shows, and dance and sports performances in the main squares and the hamlets of San Martino, Villaciambra, Aquino, Pioppo, and Grisì.
The grand allegorical float parade, initially scheduled for February 15 and postponed due to bad weather, took place on Saturday, February 21, 2026, departing in the afternoon from Piazza Inghilleri and arriving at Piazza Guglielmo.
