The festival celebrating the breast-shaped pastry of Sambuca di Sicilia
In the village of Sambuca di Sicilia, one of Italy's most beautiful towns perched on the hills of the Agrigento province, the Minna di Virgini Festivalโalso known as Minna Festโtakes place every year. It is a delicious and popular celebration centered around the town's signature pastry: the minni di virgini, small almond cakes with an unmistakable breast shape, filled with milk cream, chocolate chips, and candied pumpkin, and finished with a pure white sugar glaze.
Tradition traces the recipe back to 1725, when Sister Virgilia Casale di Rocca Menna, a nun at the Collegio di Maria in Sambuca, is said to have prepared these sweets for the first time for the wedding of the Marquis Don Pietro Beccadelli. According to local legend, the nun was inspired by the silhouette of the rolling hills surrounding the village. Since that wedding, the pastry has taken its iconic shape and name, becoming Sambuca's most beloved specialty over the centuries. Today, it is protected by a Municipal Designation (De.Co.) and crafted by the village's finest pastry shops.
The festival transforms the historic center into a culinary trail: along the streets and in the squares, pastry shops and cafes offer tastings of freshly baked minni di virgini. The tastings are complemented by an entertainment program featuring shows, concerts, street performers, and games for all ages, drawing visitors from across Sicily.
Minna Fest is not an isolated event: it coincides with the celebrations in honor of Maria Santissima dell'Udienza, the patron saint of Sambuca, held on the third Sunday of May. It is a time when popular devotion, religious processions, gastronomic traditions, and entertainment intertwine, giving the Agrigento village one of its most vibrant weeks of the year. For those visiting the Belice Valley and the surroundings of Agrigento, it is the perfect opportunity to discover Sambuca, its most famous sweet, and its festive atmosphere.
The 2026 edition of the Minna Fest will take place on Saturday, May 16, 2026, in Piazza della Vittoria, Sambuca di Sicilia, starting from 4:00 PM. The festival is organized by the Comitato Palio dell'Udienza and is part of the celebrations in honor of Maria Santissima dell'Udienza, which reach a historic milestone in 2026.
The absolute stars remain the minni di virgini, available for tasting throughout the center, alongside a program of shows and concerts. The guest of honor for the 2026 edition is Raffaella Fico.
The full detailed program (concert times and guests) will be released by the Comitato Palio dell'Udienza closer to the event.
