The prickly pear festival in the city of The Leopard
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Ficodindia Fest is the most anticipated food and wine event of the autumn in Santa Margherita di Belice, a town in the province of Agrigento, Sicily. Established in the early 2000s, the festival celebrates one of the region's agricultural gems: the prickly pear, the iconic fruit of the Belice Valley, grown on approximately two hundred hectares that make the area a significant regional production hub. For two days, usually in mid-October, the heart of the town transforms into an open-air stage filled with flavors, music, and traditions.
At the heart of the festival are the food stalls set up in Piazza Matteotti, where visitors can sample fresh prickly pears and their many derivatives: jams, cakes, ice creams, and liqueurs. Alongside the star fruit, there is space for other delicacies of the Belice Valley, from Vastedda del Belice cheese to ricotta made with local sheep's milk, and the traditional zabbinata, fresh hot ricotta served straight from the production process. There are also opportunities for discussion and debates focused on promoting local produce, with meetings designed for both farmers and consumers.
The Ficodindia Fest program combines taste and culture: art exhibitions by local artists, costume parades, vintage car rallies and sports cars animating the town center, street performances for families, concerts, and folk entertainment with characteristic Sicilian carts, music, and traditional dances. The event takes place in the city of The Leopard, linked to the figure of Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa: your visit can be enriched by a stop at the Gattopardo Museum and the locations that inspired the famous novel.
The Ficodindia Fest is organized by the Municipality of Santa Margherita di Belice, with the support of the Sicilian Region and the Department of Agriculture, and involves local associations and hospitality schools from the Terre Sicane area. More than just a village festival, it is an opportunity to discover the agricultural and cultural identity of an authentic corner of inland Sicily, between the province of Agrigento and the borders of the province of Trapani.
The Ficodindia Fest is expected to renew its autumn appointment in 2026 with the prickly pear festival in Santa Margherita di Belice. As in previous editions, the event will take place in Piazza Matteotti with food stalls, tastings of prickly pears and their derivatives, local products from the Belice Valley, exhibitions, shows, and folk entertainment. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially communicated: the full program will be published by the organizers closer to the event.
