The festival of ancient water mills in the Mill Valley of Longiarù
The Mill Day, known in Ladin as Roda di Murins and in German as Mühlenfest, is one of the most evocative traditional events in the Val Badia. It takes place in Longiarù (Lungiarü in Ladin, Campill in German), a picturesque hamlet in the municipality of San Martino in Badia/St. Martin in Thurn, in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, Trentino-South Tyrol. The festival was created to preserve and revive the heritage of the famous Mill Valley (Val di Morins in Ladin), a unique cultural landscape in the Dolomites.
The heart of the event is a 1.5-kilometre trail that climbs along a stream, connecting eight fully restored ancient water mills. Once, these mills harnessed the power of water to grind grain for the valley's farming families; today, they stand as symbols of the ancient Ladin culture and have been restored to their former glory. During the day, one of the historic mills returns to operation exactly as it did over a hundred years ago, allowing visitors to observe the grain milling process up close and discover how a water wheel works.
The festival combines nature, gastronomy, and farming culture in an experience designed for the whole family. The main meeting point is the Lüch de Vanc farm, which hosts the farmers' market featuring authentic artisanal products sourced directly from the valley's farms. Proposed activities include:
In the traditional edition of the Roda di Murins, the day is further enriched by live music and performances by a local band, in addition to games for children organized with the Natural Park rangers.
Nestled in one of the most authentic corners of the UNESCO-listed Dolomites, the Mill Day is an opportunity to rediscover the rhythms and flavors of the past. The event is organized by the San Vigilio | San Martin - Dolomites Tourist Cooperative and is an unmissable appointment for anyone visiting Longiarù and the Val Badia during the summer.
The Longiarù Mill Day returns on Thursday, July 16, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The event, set along the evocative Mill Valley trail, offers visits to the restored ancient water mills and a demonstration of grain milling in a historic mill brought back into operation.
The farmers' market with typical valley products will be held at the Lüch de Vanc farm, while along the route there will be bread baking according to the ancient Ladin method, horseback riding, walks, and activities dedicated to children. An authentic immersion into the farming traditions of the Dolomites, with tastings of local gastronomic specialties. Admission is free.
The festival is held in Longiarù (Lungiarü/Campill), a hamlet of San Martino in Badia/St. Martin in Thurn, along the Mill Valley trail with the meeting point at the Lüch de Vanc farm. Postal code 39030, Province of Bolzano.
Longiarù can be reached by car via the SS244 Val Badia road, with parking available in the hamlet. In summer, the use of public transport and local shuttles is recommended. The Mill Valley can be explored on foot along an easy 1.5 km trail.
