The four Sella passes closed to traffic and reserved for cyclists, starting from Selva di Val Gardena
The Sellaronda Bike Day is one of the most beloved events in Alpine cycle tourism. Twice a year, in spring and autumn, the roads of the four Dolomite passes surrounding the Sella Group — Gardena Pass, Sella Pass, Pordoi Pass, and Campolongo Pass — are completely closed to motorized traffic and reserved exclusively for bicycles. For a few hours, the hairpin bends usually crowded with cars and motorcycles become a vast playground for cyclists of all levels, from professionals to families with children.
The classic loop covers approximately 53 kilometers with an elevation gain of just over 1,900 meters when starting from Selva. It runs counter-clockwise, connecting the four passes: Gardena Pass (2,121 m), Sella Pass (2,213 m), Pordoi Pass (2,239 m, the highest point of the loop), and Campolongo Pass (1,875 m). There is no mandatory starting point: you can join the loop from various locations, including Piazza Nives in Selva di Val Gardena/Wolkenstein in Gröden, as well as from Corvara, Canazei, and Arabba. Those starting from Selva immediately tackle the climb to the Gardena Pass.
Participation in the Sellaronda Bike Day is completely free and does not require any registration: it is not a race, but a collective ride where everyone chooses their own pace. Technical assistance and refreshment points are set up along the route near the main passes. This simple, inclusive format has made the event a classic for road bike, gravel, and e-bike enthusiasts who wish to experience the Dolomites in a unique way, free from the noise of engines.
The municipality of Selva di Val Gardena, in the Province of Bolzano (South Tyrol, Trentino-Alto Adige region), is one of the beating hearts of Val Gardena, world-renowned for skiing, climbing, and hiking at the foot of the Sassolungo and the Sella Group. Piazza Nives, in the town center, is one of the main meeting and starting points for the event. The Dolomites framing the Sellaronda are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and cycling among these dolomite rock spires is an unforgettable experience.
2026 marks a special edition of the Sellaronda Bike Day, which is confirmed for two dates: Saturday, June 6, and Saturday, September 12, 2026. On both days, the four Dolomite passes of the Sella — Gardena, Sella, Pordoi, and Campolongo — will be closed to traffic and left to cyclists approximately from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM.
From Selva di Val Gardena, the start is at Piazza Nives, with an immediate climb toward the Gardena Pass. The full loop measures approximately 53 km with over 1,900 meters of elevation gain. The event is free, non-competitive, and requires no registration.
Selva di Val Gardena can be reached by car via the A22 Brenner motorway (exit Chiusa/Klausen or Bolzano Nord), driving up Val Gardena along the SS242. The nearest train station is Bolzano/Bozen, which is connected to Selva by local bus services.
During the event days, the four passes are closed to motorized traffic approximately from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. We recommend starting in the morning to complete the loop at your own pace.
Participation is free and no registration is required. Technical assistance points are available along the route.
Bring layered clothing: the weather at high altitude is variable even in summer. A helmet is highly recommended, and lights and a windbreaker are useful. Always check the updated dates on the official website.
