The heritage festival in the city of two UNESCO sites
The Michael Festival is the international heritage festival of Monte Sant'Angelo, in the Province of Foggia, in the heart of the Gargano. Every year, at the beginning of May, the city celebrates the spring apparition of Archangel Michael with three days dedicated to faith, history, culture, and live performance. It is the event where the Gargano community shares its deepest identity with the world—that of an ancient pilgrimage site along the Via Sacra Langobardorum.
Monte Sant'Angelo is the only Italian city to hold two UNESCO recognitions: the Sanctuary of Saint Michael the Archangel, included since 2011 in the serial site «The Lombards in Italy. Places of Power (568-774 AD)», and the ancient beech forests of the Foresta Umbra, part of the transnational site «Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe» since 2017. The festival weaves these two souls—the spiritual and the natural—into a widespread program that spans the Archangel's Grotto, the squares, the Castle, and the trails of the Gargano National Park.
Each edition of the Michael Festival offers scientific conferences, exhibitions, children's workshops, cultural walks, moments of prayer, and performances. The emotional heart is the historical re-enactment of the battle between the Byzantines and Lombards, which brings the legend of the Archangel's apparition and the Lombard victory to life. Alongside religious events linked to the Sanctuary and the Archdiocese of Manfredonia-Vieste-San Giovanni Rotondo, the festival makes space for contemporary art, music, and the promotion of local traditions, such as the Sammecalère.
The Michael Festival is promoted by the Municipality of Monte Sant'Angelo with the Puglia Region, the Gargano National Park Authority, the Archdiocese, the Sanctuary, and the Italia Langobardorum Association. It is an international event that places the Apulian city within the European network of Michaelic sites and pilgrimage routes.
The ninth edition of the Michael Festival took place in Monte Sant'Angelo from May 7 to 9, 2026, with a preview on May 6 and a repeat performance on the 10th. The chosen theme, «The Gate of Heaven», celebrated the 950th anniversary of the Bronze Doors of the Sanctuary of Saint Michael the Archangel. The festival, promoted by the Municipality with the Puglia Region, the Gargano National Park Authority, the Archdiocese, and the Italia Langobardorum Association, wove together spirituality, history, and spectacle in the Gargano city of two UNESCO sites.
The most anticipated moment was the historical re-enactment «The Apparition of Victory» with actor Giorgio Pasotti in Piazza Carlo d'Angiò. The cultural front was also rich, featuring a conference on the 950th anniversary of the Bronze Doors and a lecture-performance by historian Antonio Musarra.
Events are held in Monte Sant'Angelo (FG), between the Sanctuary of Saint Michael the Archangel, the Castle, Piazza Carlo d'Angiò, the Municipal Library, and the historic center. Some activities take place along the trails of the Gargano National Park.
Monte Sant'Angelo can be reached by car via the SS89 Garganica road; bus connections are available from Foggia and Manfredonia. The nearest airport is Bari, and the main railway station is Foggia.
Most events (conferences, walks, re-enactments, guided tours) are free to attend. Reservations may be required for some activities.
Full program and updates are available on the official website festivalmichael.it and the Municipality of Monte Sant'Angelo website.
