The Strait's half marathon in the heart of Messina
The Messina Half Marathon is one of the most anticipated events on the Sicilian running calendar. Held in the historic center of Messina, the capital of the Metropolitan City of the same name in Sicily, the event transforms the city's main streets into a large, traffic-free race course for the day. The core of the event is the historic "Eufemio da Messina" Half Marathon, covering the official distance of 21.097 km, organized for over a decade by Polisportiva Odysseus Messina under the aegis of FIDAL.
The day brings together several competitions under a single start line, designed to welcome athletes of all levels:
The route follows a 5.274 km circuit, to be completed twice for the Shakespeare Run and four times for the half marathon. The course touches some of the city's most iconic thoroughfares—Viale Garibaldi, Via dei Mille, and Viale San Martino—with a picturesque passage in front of the Messina Cathedral and its famous square. The start and finish lines are located near Piazza Unione Europea, just a stone's throw from the Strait's waterfront.
The Messina Half Marathon is more than just a sporting challenge: the event pairs the race with a strong commitment to charity. In recent editions, thanks to a partnership with Dole Italia, a charity run has supported cancer research projects under the slogan "Run with us, do good for yourself and others." The event also promotes sports inclusion through its collaboration with FISDIR.
Supported by the Municipality of Messina, which presents the initiative at Palazzo Zanca every year, the event attracts around 400 participants, including competitive athletes, amateurs, and walkers. For visitors, it is also a perfect opportunity to discover Messina, the gateway to Sicily overlooking the Strait, and its extraordinary historical and artistic heritage.
The 2026 Messina Half Marathon took place on Sunday, February 22, 2026, with athletes gathering at 8:00 AM and a single start at 9:15 AM near Piazza Unione Europea. The 5.274 km traffic-free urban circuit crossed Viale Garibaldi, Via dei Mille, and Viale San Martino, passing in front of Piazza Duomo.
In the "Eufemio da Messina" Half Marathon (21.097 km), Riccardo Pavone (G.S. Indomita Torregrotta) triumphed in 1h13'09", ahead of Emanuele Sesti (1h14'58") and Andrea Meduri (1h16'14"). Among the women, Eleonora Salamone won in 1h52'24", followed by Valentina Catania and the American Svetlana Atwood. In the Shakespeare Run (10.548 km), the men's victory went to Davide Currò in 37'24".
The solidarity aspect was also confirmed, with the charity run organized in collaboration with Dole Italia to support CRILA and the Fundación Pro Cáncer La Ceiba in Honduras.
Messina is accessible by train via the Messina Centrale station, located a short distance from Piazza Unione Europea. By car, take the Messina Centro exit on the A18/A20 motorway; please note that many city center streets are closed to traffic on race days. From the mainland, you can arrive by ferry across the Strait.
Registration is handled online via the Endu platform. Indicative fees range from approximately 22 to 28 euros for the half marathon and 12 to 18 euros for the Shakespeare Run, depending on the registration period.
Athletes gather from 8:00 AM, with a single start time for all races near Piazza Unione Europea.
