Promoted by the municipal administration alongside local parishes, associations, and schools, the program runs throughout December until Epiphany, reaching various districts of the town and engaging both young and old in a spirit of solidarity and sharing.

The Dream of Mary Living Nativity

The most anticipated and iconic event of the festival is the Presepe Vivente Il Sogno di Maria, written and directed by Rocco Chinnici with co-direction by Melita Messina. This is no ordinary static nativity scene: the old town, with its entrance on Corso Garibaldi opposite the municipal library, transforms into a true open-air stage where scenes of Jesus' birth alternate with those of the Passion.

The narrative thread is original and evocative: it is the Virgin Mary who, while awaiting the birth, dreams and relives the most significant moments of her Son's life in advance. Along an itinerant path with numerous scenic stations, dozens of costumed actors bring emotionally powerful tableaux to life, guiding visitors on a journey that weaves together faith, theater, and local memory.

A well-established tradition, the living nativity of San Filippo del Mela has gained prestige far beyond Sicilian borders over the years: the performance has been awarded best living nativity in Italy nine times and best in Europe once, a record that makes it one of the most popular events in the Messina Christmas calendar.
