The Messina and Strait of Messina Pride for LGBTQIA+ rights
Stretto Pride is the annual event in Messina that celebrates the pride and rights of the LGBTQIA+ community. Organized by the Arcigay Makwan association, led by Rosario Duca, the event attracts thousands of people to the capital of the Strait, not only from Sicily but also from nearby Calabria, creating a manifestation with a strong interregional character that symbolizes the union between the two shores of the Strait.
The heart of the event is the rainbow parade that travels through the center of Messina, accompanied by floats, music, and choirs. Along the route, which touches the main streets and squares of the city, associations, activists, families, and citizens march together to share the values of equality and inclusion. At the end of the parade, the square transforms into an open-air stage with speeches, performances, and festivities that continue into the evening.
Stretto Pride is not limited to the day of the parade: in the preceding weeks, the city is enlivened by a rich calendar of meetings, debates, cultural workshops, and performances. These events lead Messina toward the parade, addressing issues related to civil rights, gender identity, inclusion, and the fight against discrimination, involving schools, associations, and the general public.
Over the years, Stretto Pride has established itself as one of the most important civil events in the province of Messina and the entire Strait area. The event has received the patronage of the Municipality of Messina and the Metropolitan City, and has seen the collaboration of local artists: for the latest editions, cartoonists and illustrators Lelio Bonaccorso and Michela De Domenico from Officina del Sole created the official graphics for the event.
Stretto Pride 2026 will be held in Messina on Saturday, September 12, 2026, with the slogan "On the route of rights". For this edition, the organization, led by Arcigay Makwan, has chosen to postpone the event from its usual June/July period to September, to avoid overlapping with administrative elections and to ensure broader and more relaxed participation.
The event aims to involve thousands of people from all over Sicily and nearby Calabria, confirming the interregional nature of the Strait Pride. The official t-shirt graphics were created and donated by cartoonists Lelio Bonaccorso and Michela De Domenico of Officina del Sole. The parade will be preceded by a calendar of meetings, debates, and cultural workshops that will animate the city in the preceding months.
At the moment, the parade route, times, sponsorships, and full program have not yet been released: they will be announced by the organizers on official channels as the event approaches.
Messina is easily accessible by train (Messina Centrale station, well-connected to Catania and Palermo) and by car via the A18 and A20 motorways. From Calabria, you can arrive via the ferries connecting Villa San Giovanni and Reggio Calabria to Messina.
Participation in the parade is free and open to everyone. The exact route, meeting times, departure times, and the full program of side events are published by the organizers on the official Arcigay Makwan channels in the weeks leading up to the event.
