The Nativity comes to life in the alleys of the medieval village of Venetico Superiore

The Venetico Living Nativity is one of the most heartfelt Christmas events on the Tyrrhenian side of the Peloritani Mountains. It takes place in the evocative historic center of Venetico Superiore, in the Municipality of Venetico, in the province of Messina and the Sicily Region, where stone alleys and ancient houses of the medieval village provide a natural backdrop for the Nativity representation.
During the event evenings, the village perched at the foot of the Castello Spadafora comes alive with dozens of costumed actors. The route winds through the town streets, featuring traditional Nativity scenes: the grotto with the Holy Family, shepherds, the Three Wise Men, and numerous workshops reconstructing the ancient trades of the peasant and artisan civilization. Visitors encounter the blacksmith, the carpenter, the baker, the spinner, and other figures who bring the past to life, accompanied by tastings of typical local products.
The event is organized by the Associazione Venetico per tutti, in collaboration with the Associazione Nikolaus, the Christian Workers Movement, and with the patronage of the Municipality of Venetico. It is a deeply popular and participatory event, the result of volunteer work by many village residents who dedicate weeks of preparation to setting up the scenes and costumes each year. The Living Nativity thus represents not only a religious re-enactment but also a moment of strong identity and cohesion for the entire Venetico community.
Venetico Superiore is the historic and mountain core of the Municipality of Venetico, one of the smallest villages in Sicily. Dominated by the 15th-century castle built by the Spadafora family, it preserves the Mother Church of San Nicolò, dating back to the early 16th century, and a beautiful monumental fountain topped by a mermaid statue. This setting of stone and history makes the living nativity particularly evocative, intertwining Christmas tradition with the town's architectural heritage.
The Living Nativity is traditionally held during the Christmas period, between late December and Epiphany, in the evening hours. Admission is free. It is an ideal opportunity to discover an authentic corner of the Messina area and experience the magic of the Sicilian Christmas away from the major tourist circuits.
The 2026 edition of the Venetico Living Nativity does not yet have an official calendar. Based on established tradition, the event is expected to return to the historic center of Venetico Superiore during the Christmas holidays, featuring the route through the Nativity scenes, ancient trade workshops, and costumed actors. The final dates and program will be announced by the Associazione Venetico per tutti closer to the event.
Venetico Superiore can be reached by car via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, taking the Milazzo or Rometta exit and continuing inland to the village. The coastal hamlet of Venetico Marina is served by the SS113 road and the Tyrrhenian railway line (Venetico station).
Admission to the Living Nativity is free.
The event takes place in the evening and outdoors, in the alleys of the historic center: warm clothing and comfortable footwear suitable for the village's stone streets are recommended.
