The neighborhood Carnival of Borgata Finocchio, in Rome's 6th Municipality
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Merchants' Carnival is the neighborhood festival of Borgata Finocchio, located on the eastern outskirts of Rome (Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, Lazio), along the Via Casilina, bordering Monte Compatri and the Castelli Romani area. This is not a monumental carnival like those that fill the historic center; it is a community-focused celebration, born and grown thanks to the local shopkeepers, who transform the neighborhood's commercial streets into a path of masks, music, and confetti every year.
The heart of the event is the masked parade, which starts from Via Fontana Candida and travels through the neighborhood's main arteries: Via Casilina, Via di Rocca Cencia, Via Mandanici, Via Motta Camastra, and Via Bolognetta, before returning to Via Fontana Candida. During the parade, temporary traffic closures are implemented, signaled by the Rome Capital Local Police, turning the neighborhood into a long, pedestrian-only party zone for the afternoon.
The parade is open to anyone who wishes to join in costume. There is no formal registration or float competition: people simply march together, among groups in costume, loud music, drums, and entertainers, while the shops along the route remain open, participating with decorations, Carnival sweets, and small surprises for children.
The uniqueness of this event lies in its name: it is the merchants of the borough who take charge of the organization, permits, and setup. This is a common formula in the Roman suburbs, where the network of local businesses takes on a social role that goes beyond commerce, creating meeting opportunities for a neighborhood otherwise lacking large, equipped public spaces.
The festival is part of the busy Lazio Carnival calendar, which brings dozens of towns and neighborhoods to life between January and February, from the historic parades of Ronciglione and Frascati to the municipal festivals of Rome. The Merchants' Carnival represents the most authentic and everyday version of this tradition: the one celebrated right outside your door, without tickets or grandstands.
Borgata Finocchio is the gateway to the Castelli Romani: just a few kilometers away are Monte Compatri, Colonna, and the Castelli Romani Regional Park, while along the Via Casilina, you can reach the archaeological sites of Gabii and Torre Nuova. A day of Carnival in the borough can easily become an opportunity for an excursion into the Roman countryside.
The 2026 edition of the Merchants' Carnival was spread over two dates, February 1 and 8, 2026, in Borgata Finocchio, on the eastern edge of Rome. The formula remained the usual neighborhood festival style: a masked parade along the commercial streets, entertainment for children, and the direct involvement of the borough's shopkeepers, who managed the decorations and hospitality.
As every year, the event took place entirely on the street, with free admission, with the participation of families from the 6th Municipality and neighboring districts. No detailed program with specific times was released: the event is announced from time to time by the merchants and local information channels.
By car: Via Casilina (SS6), Finocchio exit; from the Grande Raccordo Anulare, take exit 19 - Casilina, then continue for about 8 km east. By train/light rail: the Rome-Giardinetti railway and Cotral bus lines along the Casilina serve the area; the nearest Metro C station is Pantano, which is connected by local buses.
During the parade, temporary traffic closures are expected on Via Fontana Candida, Via Casilina, Via di Rocca Cencia, Via Mandanici, Via Motta Camastra, and Via Bolognetta. It is recommended to park outside the route and reach the festival on foot.
Free outdoor event, suitable for families with children.
Carnival dates change every year according to the liturgical calendar: it is advisable to check the days and times with the local merchants or via the 6th Municipality's channels before traveling.
