A patronal feast in the heart of Rome's eastern suburbs

The Santa Maria di Loreto Patronal Feast is the most important event of the year for the Castelverde district, in the Lunghezza area, at the eastern edge of the Municipality of Rome, within Municipio VI. The recurrence is tied to the liturgical memory of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Loreto, which the Church calendar sets for December 10th: it is during those days that the parish on Via Santa Maria di Loreto enlivens the area with celebrations, gatherings, and festive moments open to everyone.

This is not a tourist attraction or a major city event: it is a community festival, the kind that has always marked the calendar of towns and neighborhoods in the Lazio region. Precisely for this reason, it retains an authenticity that has been partially lost in the more central areas of Rome.

Our Lady of Loreto, patroness of a frontier community

The cult of the Virgin of Loreto is among the most deeply rooted in Italy: linked to the Holy House of Loreto in the Marche region, it spread across the peninsula over the centuries and gave its name to dozens of parishes. In Castelverde, the dedication is particularly significant because it evokes the theme of home and family, which is central to a neighborhood that was born and grew rapidly beyond the Grande Raccordo Anulare.

The parish territory is vast and densely populated: it includes the Castelverde area and the neighboring zones of Lunghezza and Corcolle, where thousands of families live, dealing with the distance from the city center and public services that are not always sufficient. The patronal feast thus becomes a concrete opportunity to meet, to give visibility to local associations, and to recognize oneself as a neighborhood.

What happens during the festival

The heart of the celebration remains liturgical, with the Solemn Mass on December 10th and a preparatory triduum. Initiatives involving community groups develop around the celebrations:

• Solemn celebrations on the day of the memory of Our Lady of Loreto, often with the presence of ecclesiastical authorities;
• Moments for children, linked to the weekly oratory and catechism groups, which bring together over two hundred children preparing for their first communion and about eighty teenagers preparing for confirmation;
• Solidarity initiatives promoted by the parish Caritas and the listening center, which supports about a hundred families every month, and by the Solidarity Laboratory;
• Community meetings and convivial moments open to the neighborhood, animated by parish groups — from the Renewal in the Spirit to the Franciscan fraternity, up to the Family Space.

In December 2025, the festival took on particular significance: Cardinal Vicar Baldo Reina paid a pastoral visit to the community on December 10th, on the occasion of the patronal feast and the official entry of the new parish priest, Father Michele Ferretti, who had already served as deputy parish priest of the same community eight years earlier.

A Roman December off the tourist trail

Those visiting Rome in December associate the city with the markets in the center and the Christmas lights. The Santa Maria di Loreto festival tells of another Rome: that of the peripheral neighborhoods, where patronal feasts keep alive a popular tradition that has deep roots in Lazio. The atmosphere is intimate, familiar, and very far from the crowds of the historic center.

The date falls in the middle of Advent, when the community is already looking towards Christmas: for this reason, the patronal feast effectively opens the neighborhood's Christmas period, with decorations, carols, and initiatives that continue through the holidays.
